yes you can. Very few actually, and not usually including linux. Also wine doesn't work for games or emulators that require directx.
Without killing it you can't from within the VM. Lol, you really think that, do you. Just install DirectX on it and you can also run these. Yes, I've done that myself on a Linux installation, a few days ago.
If you do heavy tweaking and love using tools such as "gpedit.msc", that's a reason to go Ultimate. Otherwise, you'll be right at home on Home Premium. I remember when we used to use pirated versions of Windows. A lot of people emphasized that I should not, under any circumstances go to microsoft.com or do things that would open a communication to them (error reporting, updates, etc.). It all changed when we got laptops preloaded with genuine OEM Vista and 7 and the computer we used to use broke down. --- With regards to Windows 8, what Virtual machines and versions did you test it on? Way way back on the developer preview, they say it only works on VMware Player 4, and I heard it isn't available separately yet (I have VMware Player 3.something).
I wont be getting Windows 8 for sometime yet there are a number of reasons but here are the links to a few news reports about windows 8 http://www.theregister.co.uk/2012/11/01/win8_exploited_already/ http://www.theregister.co.uk/2012/11/30/windows_8_paypal_upgrade_broken/ I will wait until a service pack is out I think.
its usually recommended to wait until a service pack has been out at least 6 months before upgrading, as that gives them time to fix the majority of the bugs. I wont be upgrading to 8 at all.
Microsoft really needs to stop shitting out new operating systems every few years. Windows XP is good enough as is (for 32-bit system architectures) and Windows 7 is what Windows Vista should have been in the first place. There's no need for Windows 8 to be released right now. If they want to design an operating system for the smartphones and tablets, I say go right on ahead, but for fuck sakes, stop mucking around with the Windows OS for PCs! Windows 7 is perfectly fine as it is now, and there's no need for Windows 8 to take over. I have a feeling that Windows 8 is going to become "Vista 2"/"ME 3"... On another note, I get irritated whenever I import all the software tools I use to a new Windows operating system just to run into compatibility issues. Because of this, I have to install Windows XP on a virtual machine just to run the software that doesn't work on Windows 7 or 8.
Personally hate Windows 8. I use a desktop, and Windows 8 is just too much for tablets. Not sure why they even make it avaliable for desktops.
You are right they are already working on Windows 9 and as 7 was modeled around vista 9 will be modeled around 8. Given that have have already released the end of support date for Vista/7/8 you know it wont be long before we start to see beta versions of 9 being released. They is already a lot of chatter going around Microsoft partner network/partnership program
end of support dates can be changed. Windows XP still has another 2 years of extended support because vista was such a painful failure that they extended it until 2014.
yes they can, how ever with the lawsuit that is going on over windows 8 and windows 8 live tiles, I know windows will more than likely buy there way out of it although I think this has already failed as it has been 2 years that they have been using this type of software. However I do see no matter what a change coming quick
I just gave Windows 8 a try for a day at work. The concept of Windows 8 is retarded. Instead of having the nice, compact Start Menu (which many of us know and love), it is now replaced by a Start screen, which consumes your whole entire screen. What the hell, Microsoft! Even worse, you can't find every application with ease. You can go to the Windows desktop, but there's no Start button for the convenient start menu there. I'm staying the fuck away from this piece of trash! I'll stick with Windows 7, thank you. EDIT: If you are planning to replace your Windows laptop, now's the time to do so. All the electronic stores are phasing out Windows 7 machines to make way for Windows 8 machines!
I thought Windows 8 was one of those things that you needed to get used to. I haven't used it yet but I'm not completely opposed to it. I heard it runs better on a variety of machines than what was previously installed, like XP for instance. Does the start menu really make that much of a difference to you guys? it should barely alter your workflow from the way I see it. The new menu has improved readability and it gives you easier access to the stuff you need. The fact that it takes up your whole screen can get annoying but I don't see how that gets in the way when you're trying to launch something, you're noting going to be able to type something in your word processor, or interact with your game in the 2 seconds. There are also classic start menus that you can download. I can't really understand why it would become "Vista 2" like you guys are speculating. It performs pretty damn well, and aside from the start menu I can't understand why else people would hate it. You still have a desktop interface and everything, it looked perfectly normal from what I experienced on the laptops/desktops I tried out at the store.
it's not a desktop interface, its a touchscreen interface. 98% of desktop PCs don't have touchscreens.
Slightly off topic post but, I won't upgrade to Win8 IF IT WILL NOT RUN MY FAVORITE EMULATORS AND ROM TOOLS. I've also heard that older games like SIMCity 4 doesn't work on it, so meh And even to this day I'm still pretty pissed off that I can no longer use SNESTool on Win7 without installing DOSBox
