why ban smoking?

I feel dirty that I was used for a debate class, but congrats on doing well.

 

Dumb? He's a little 5foot4inches kid who wears glasses and has almost no muscles, my friend couldn't stop that kid... And I was there too late to stop that bloke myself

I don't quite understand that... My mother didn't smoke when I was a baby and sorry if it sounded negative but I felt like saying the word crap

 

Well, to all the smokers out there, at least give one good reason why you are smoking. One that DOES NOT play the age-old "it's my body, and I can do whatever I want" card. Is it a habit? Addiction? Recreation? Spite?
Enlighten me.

 

@CJ: I was born with defective eyes, my liver is a tad weak (when I was born I was all yellowish due to an infected liver & my lungs, well let's just say asthma is least of my problems.

 

Recreation, mostly.

I purchase quality tobacco, and roll up how many I feel I might have in a day with my nifty crank machine. Nothing better than a rich tasting cigarette that isn't name brand. No chemicals, no fire safe measures put into them.

Smoking is kinda pointless this century, if you've started i'm not saying "STOP" but from studies it's effects are overrall negative than positive

why ban smoking? maybe not ban, but place location for smoking. As for my own experience, if you want to smoke, then smoke, but respect people who doesnt want to inhale it.

As for a scientific research, its not really needed to begin with to know if smoking is good for you or bad.
but to try smoking, you will easily know it that it is bad. When you cough, your body tells you that it does not accept it inside, it rejects it.

if the your body rejects something, it means its bad for your health.

 

well, here, we have a law that states that no smoking in public areas, it is only implemented by to authorities just to get money from people.

i cant imagine anybody who would be happy to inhale smoke, even an insane person would complain if he/she inhaled smoke.

 

Why ban smoking?  To hell with smoking, fucking us over.  In my damn high school, everyone of them blacks are smoking!!! Everywhere!!  People say get away?  How the hell do I get away when it's everywhere.  I have to go to the bathroom sometimes you know?  In the bathroom guess whos there?  A guy puffing that shit in the stall.  I try holding my piss, but it hurts dude, it hurts.  I don't want to be smelling that shit everytime I take a piss!  And what about the people that try to sell it to you?  I tell them to fuck off and get a life.  What should I risk?  My lungs or my bladder?  I say my lungs...  Damn teachers won't do shit about these smokers, which they should... which our country should... ban that shit, or atleast away from us, the non-addicted non-wasted people.

 

thats the same in many places here. even in church and hospital, they are smoking. I don't care if they smoke as long a he/she is the only one there. or better yet, why dont the put a fishbowl or helmet while smoking so that they are the only ones inhaling it.

I hope they exhange those death sticks with exploding death sticks to teach them a lesson.

Smoking is very much a recreational thing for me at least,
I smoke when I'm with friends or at the pub (outside of course)...

Something that's interesting though is that,
while i've been smoking relatively regularly for 4-5 years, I am in no way addicted...
I regularly go without cigarettes for up to 2 weeks if circumstance seperates me from social contact,
I can easily refuse whenever I feel like it, and I have never once smoked a cigarette on my own
(And I know one or two other people who are similar)

Which makes you wonder, should we take the whole "it's addictive" thing as gospel?
Surely there are factors that limit/eradicate the addictive effect of nicotine in some people?

 

Damn, seems like a lot of you hate smokers. It hurts, really. I'm assuming a lot of you are non-smokers, and you seem to have several negative connotations towards smokers. I think all of this banning is wrong. Smoking bans have gotten so extreme it seems like smokers will end up having no place to smoke at all. They're trying to limit smoking even outdoors now!

Here's the thing- if you don't like smoking, that's fine, no one is forcing you. If you see someone smoking can't you just, I dunno, walk around them? If not, politely excuse yourself and ask them to give you more space to pass. Does that just seem too polite? Smokers have a right to smoke just as much as you have to be outside. Smokers are people too, and they have feelings much like you do. Can't you just try to see it from their perspective? And another thing too, what is it with this ban on smoking in bars? If the bartender(s) and bar patrons are fine with smoking, shouldn't it be their choice and not the governments? And lets say someone walks in who doesn't like that there is smoking in here, is it that hard for them to figure out they could always go somewhere else for a pint? Same thing goes for a smoker. There are very few bars I've been to that will allow you to smoke indoors, albeit illegally of course. Do I go there? Sure. Do I care of people smoke? Not at all, it's their right to, and if I don't like it I can always go somewhere else.

I hate this negative stereotype of smokers being these evil entities that are always trying to kick the habit. They aren't lurking behind every corner laughing maniacally as they blow a puff of smoke at pregnant mothers. Can you just think, perhaps, that these smokers LIKE smoking? They do know it's unhealthy for them, of course, but what is the point of living a longer life if you can't enjoy what you are doing?

 

hm, maybe if he is smoking grass, weed or m-leaves, it will be addictive, but in cigars and their sons, cigarettes, it dont believe that its addictive.

When I was in college, I smoke the most expensive cigarettes and cigars with my "cool" friends, but its just because of peer pressure. I was never addicted. maybe i tried to use it to get to sleep because it makes me dizzy, but I can stop anytime. I stopped using it, when i transfer to another school, but i never crave for it.

 

Damn, I forgot about that! Smoking makes you look like a badass, especially if you are playing pool and taking shots at the same time. 9/10 people agree.

I looked up some stuff about second hand smoking giving people cancer and killing them and could only find stats from anti-smoking websites. It's kinda hard to believe stats that can easily be biased or misrepresented if it's just to benefit their standing. One thing I found interesting though was that one site said "If a person spends more than two hours in a room where someone is smoking, the nonsmoker inhales the equivalent of four cigarettes" (Division of Periodontology, UofM).

Now I know some of you are going ... but that really translates to about 20 minutes worth of smoking for a regular smoker smoking from a cigarette. And another interesting thing is that the site also says that the smoker only inhales about 15% of the smoke, and there's 85% still hovering about the air... Just how the HELL does someone get such little smoke when so much is floating around in the air? Or is something being misreported? I dunno.

 

As i said, i'm not into banning smoking but placing areas for them to smoke. And let it be enforced strictly. the problem is that there are smokers out there that smoke just everywhere, and why would anybody will excuse themselves to the smokers? The smokers are the one disturbing people, so why would non-smoker excuse themselves? Will this be like this: " Oh, pls excuse me for disturbing your smoking session." I didnt mean to inhale your death air. It was an accident.

Why dont smokers just buy a oxygen tank but instead of oxygen they will inhale, inhale your second hand smoke. or better yet, why dont you put your head in front of the cars exhust? its the same and it will help sto global warming.

 

Is it too much to be polite? I'm just saying if you can't walk around the smoker or get by them comfortably, ask them to, but be polite. There's nothing wrong with being well mannered. It's not the smokers intention for you to inhale their smoke, nor are they doing it out of spite. They're just having a smoke. That's it. Just think of smokers as really, really fat men who need a little more space to get around. So just imagine the smoke floating around them is their massive gut coming out to meet you, but it's lava gut, so don't touch it!
