People who try learning Japanese from anime are sorely mistaken in regards to their proficiency with the language. So are people who think because they've done several years on Japanese in high school they can have a decent conversation or translate stuff. In high school we had a guy who tried supplementing his Japanese with anime. He'd come into class and ask the teacher what situation something ("ãŠã‚Œ" for example) could be used in and generally fucked with the language when doing readings. We all disliked him and his planet-sized ego because he thought Naruto would teach him shit. If you're going to learn stuff from anime, I find it's better to pick up single words - but only when you have sufficient control over the language already, to the point when you don't need to know what an entire phrase means, only the occasional word. tl;dr It takes years to learn Japanese with full-time study, don't think your weeaboo anime habit or your high-school classes will stand you in any stead.
I'm taking my second year in Elementary japanese, and we're all a bunch of Otaku/Weaboos anyway, so we aren't really all that uptight about stuff like that. One cute thing I learned from anime is not any specific words, but the accent. It's not perfect, but it's enough to make some of the girls in the front row scream and go "ZOMG KAWAII!!!!!!" I still need to practice it a lot because my voice is naturally breathy, and that's not what the sexier Seiyu sound like.
Arabic : natural English : at 8 ; watching sesame street German : at 13 ; watching sitcoms and cartoons Japanes : never :'(
For the lulz. And, as a joke, if I ever learn how to make a flash game, it would be cool if I could dub little things in english and in japanese.
