There are 4 CS versions of Photoshop after they changed from the number labels. From my experience in computer graphics Photoshop is the most powerfull and useful for 2d graphics. It's also highly extendable with plugins and such. Vector tools in CS4 are very good but mostly usefull for masking. Illustrator is the best for vectors. Any vector work I've done has generally been created with Illustrator, it's a good idea to vector draw an illustration and then touch it up or paint it in photoshop. Check out Corey Barker's video tutorials at :

for some more interesting tutorials in photoshop. I generally send interested students to that website if their showing an aptitude for creativity ;) Good luck people

photoshop is the way to go. you can probably find a legal photoshop CS for cheap. or maybe go back to photoshop 7.0 it's older but you might find it for a cheaper price. i'm a graphic and website designer and i have been using photoshop since photoshop 5.0. it might be difficult for noobs to work with photoshop but there is plenty of tutorials out there to help you out.

I use photoshop CS4 with Tiffen and Topaz vivacity (depending on the art work I fancied doing in FS).

I finally decided to install GIMP, and i have to say it's much better than paint.net.

I'm still learning how to use it though, so i use paint.net at the same time for some effects.

    GIMP.

The only gripe I have with it though is that it has NO LINE TOOL.

GIMP and Paint.NET. I use them in sync. And Tezuka, you can press shift and drag a straight line.

I have photoshop 8, gimp and inkscape. I generally use inkscape for photo, gimp for rough work and photoshop for the fine tuning.
