So me using GIMP makes me amateur? First off, I would think that it obviously takes time and patience to work up to a certain skill level. Therefore at one time/point or another you, yourself were a noob at Photoshop.

Not everyone picks up making graphics that simple.

And I agree. I've tried to use a pirated version of Photoshop a few years ago and was totally utterly confused by it. Now, that I have GIMP, I'm not confused anymore and I can make simple signatures. So I think GIMP is easier to understand but, like all things it's hard to master.

    Photoshop CS4 is easy?
I didn't do a sig for a year once, I come back to it and I was completly lost.
However, CS allows you to extend your skill further, while GIMP can only get you to a certain level.
Also, GIMP sounds a bit like an erectile disfunction, that always put me off >.>

GIMP will get you to any level photoshop will. stop putting it down just because it doesn't cost a stupid amount of money (and no, photoshop is not worth the amount it costs), No adobe product is.

*shrug* This is my opinion, I have not yet met a person who uses GIMP for any profesional purposes.
By using CS I not only learned how to do sigs, but also website layouts, calling cards, company logos, application interfaces and such.
But I suppose it is possible to do the same in GIMP.
imo people should use whatever they want, CS has a stigma on it due to it's high price and the amazing amount of people who think making a sig with it makes them an artist.

I disagree GIMP simply doesnt have the versability or capability that photoshop has. There's a reason that photoshop and illustrator are industry standards.

yes, because the industry sidelines open source products. Not because GIMP is inferior. Illustrator is an entirely different product.

Corel's Paint Shop Pro is not an open source program, yet it's still not used, it's quite similar to GIMP.

I know that illustrator is an entirely different product, but the last time I checked the threads name wasn't GIMP vs Photoshop. If I ever feel the need to make a logo or a 'vector' I would advoid photoshop and GIMP like the plague as neither maintain quality after scaling, either up or down.

And while Illustrator is a different program, you still get it by buying Photoshop and the two are quite linked, they even have a helpfull transfer button which I quite like ^^

That's because they're raster art programs for image editing. vector art programs such as illustrator or corelDRAW are designed for image creation. Most people don't realise there's a difference between vector and raster art programs.

Nox : Thats imageready, not illustrator. They're very different ^^

Loony : I know... I just could'nt remember the word 'raster'.

    CS2, you'd be right.
CS3 and 4, there is no Image Ready anymore, it has been implemented into Photoshop, now they are one, to substitued for this, Illustrator was given ^^

and just to confuse the vector vs raster debate, into which category does Corel painter fall? I have my own ideas, just interested to see what people think.

I always considerd Painter to be like a part of Photoshop, because Photoshop is often used for the exact same thing, just take a look at most digital paintings on dev, no?

Yeah, it uses brushes much in the same way as photoshop, I'd go for raster.

lol fellas... Well I didn't mean that Using GIMP only makes you amateur... The one who is going to use GIMP Need to get use of it, just CS4 is having short easy functions updated so that makes bit easier to use... I didn't mean that there is a lot of difference...

Everyone's an amateur at this, you're not pro until you get paid, and nobody's going to pay for sigs.
People at the Olympic games are very skilled, yet amateurs.
We're not even artists, just manipulators.

well, i don't think anyone would consider themselves an artist using these programs...
