Judging by L's large daily intake of sugar, sitting down would make his body slow down until he becomes drowsy and passes out from a sugar rush. However, crouching and maintaining balance in the process requires enough sugar to keep L's body aware and active since performing tasks such as crouching consumes more sugar and keeps it at a pace steady enough to prevent the human body from crashing. This also explains why L is able to consume large daily intakes of sweets
