i pirate basically because im a teenager that needs money but doesnt have much, and pirating is okay where i live, especially when original games are sold for twice as much the price.

Moreso than anything else, my reason for pirating was DRM. I pirated many games that I'd already bought, or gotten the 'no DVD crack' or the 'no DRM crack' or, if I could find it, the 'no steam' crack. Most of the time, I'd just use PacSteam for nosteam cracks, though.

I try games and buy the ones I really enjoy or believe deserve it. The thing is, flash cards are a win win situation. I buy the game in its shrinkwrap, then throw it in the closet and play the ROM. Looking forward to making at least some extra cash in the later years.

I pirate cuz there is no other way of getting games in my country except for shipping. And in shipping 200-450% custom is added on the thing shipped.

This is what everyone should write:

Because I want the game industry to die. The reason why pirating leads to the game industries death is that if everyone did so the game companies wont earn money and then they would have to stop creating games. So everyone that gets these Roms so they wont have to pay for it doesn't give a shit about the ones who put effort in creating games. The only reason why I download Roms is to:

    1. play a game before it comes to my country and then I buy it in stores

    2. To test a game

I usually download ROMs of games I already down. Especially RPGs when dual genders are concerned. Just a weird way to play the game as a Male and also as a Female without restarting the actual game card.

    Bull sh!t.

Piracy keeps prices down. Imagine how much the next Halo (or whatever over-hyped piece of crap is next) game would be if piracy wasn't there. They could charge the Earth.

Not true. If anything, piracy would raise the prices of games as devs are making a narrower profit margin as they're selling less games.

Is removing LAN and charging a PC game at 60 USD counts as one?

    My reason for pirating?

Well I live in the UK, games tend to take ages to actually get released here (and in some cases don't ever come out).
Next point is, simply, I'm broke. DS games cost £30 and Wii games cost £30-40 depending on if it's shovelware or not.
Stores only tend to sell games that are new. Trying to find a game that is decent but old can be quite hard to do. And trying to find games for old consoles is nearly impossible.
And finally to test a game before it comes out. Sometimes I get excited about certain games but then they turn out to be rubbish. Piracy helps me to try games before I eventually buy them. Would you want to pay £30-40 for a game that sounds good but is actually rubbish?

Library condensing. It's nice to be able to switch what game I'm playing without having to pop the carts in and out. These little things be tiny.

Also, as a side- the flashcart saves faster than the actual game carts, although that was just a tiny little perk.

For any game that was NOT NDS, it was either for library condensing, being able to play even though the system is long dead/broken, or just being completely unable to find the game anywhere (relatively rare).

    (Also- first post. Hi!)

Hey guys, why don't we "redefine" Piracy for a minute?

As I see it, Games that Agencies like The ESA "should" concern themselves with are game software that is "on current gen" systems, or at least one generation below what is currently in mass production. I clearly understand why they'd be concerned with sales issues with current gen systems (or as I said one generation below) as games for current gen systems are currently being mass produced by game companies & a leaked game on the internet will definitely lead to loss of sales.

However.... They should most definitely leave games for defunct system to be freely distribution on the internet. Why you ask? Let me enumerate a few reasons, some of which are so obvious:

    1. They no longer mass produce cartridges (for extremely retro systems) &/or game disks for retro consoles.

    2. Same goes for retro consoles per se :p Boy do I ever need a new "legit" Famicom that's brand spankin' new, as I'd never trust second hand vendors both on the internet & the black market as you are pretty sure what they'll be selling is already used, or worse on its last legs.

    3. Games that they (game companies) never released outside Japan not only suffer from reason number one, but they'd even never consider re-releasing them fully translated. Take for example Der Langrisser which was re-released for the Wii:

I know it's just a Title screen, but look... it's still in Japanese!

So how can you play that if you can't read Japanese?

Well, with the help of the Fan Hack Translation community of course :p

But because these companies do not want to relinquish their rights for these abandonware games, Fan Translators have to be underground in order to do their work :p

Not only this, ROM Hack fan fictioners like Chrono Compendium had to suffer a similar fate:

    http://forum.romulation.net/index.php?topic=17254.msg196620#msg196620

OK so Square-Enix had their way, but are they planning on releasing another chapter to the Chrono series!? That incident happened over a year ago, but still no new Chrono game, except that cheap re-rehash for the NDS. Sure it introduced the series to current gen gamers, but to us originally hooked on the Chrono Series universe it's nothing more than milking a dying franchise, thanks to its owner none the less, geez :(

    4. Current gen gamers, those in the 10~25 age range are not particularly interested in retro titles. So yeah, Nintendo & it's virtual console is just milking old games whose audience is so little that any profit they might gain is so little. And why do you think they're milking old games? It's either they can not admit they've ran out of new & innovative game ideas. Or... it might be a "new way" to resolve reason number one, as reproducing cartridges does cost a lot. But if that's the argument they'll be using, then I guess it's justified. Then again, why not resolve reason number three then? They obviously know of the fan translation community's efforts & they "should" have realized that there is a fan base for games they didn't bother with in the past.

Now I've digressed, let me go back to current gen gamers per se, most current gen gamers have been blinded by "awesome" graphics that this is one of their reasons why they don't like retro games & instead want a rehashed release with souped up graphics.

You can even use RomUlation's forums to verify this as there are countless retro game discussion threads, some of which I did take part in, where there's an obvious current gen gamer who'll say, "I wish this gets rehashed on the DS with better graphics". These people obviously forgot what makes a game fun per se, & that'd be a solid game play mechanic, or in an RPG's sense, an awesome storyline. That's why I admit to have been hooked on several Flash games like Destruc2tank, Monster's Den &/or Robot Unicorn Attack as those games have a solid & addictive gameplay mechanic.

And, I guess I've ranted enough LOL! So I'll just end by saying...

"Yes to no NDS ROMs (for now, until whatever new system comes out) & boo! For taking away our retro games you greedy sons of bitches hiding behind the ESA." ROFL! [IMG]

Devs only make what the publishers pay them. It is usually the publisher who profits. There are obvious exceptions (Nintendo being one since they publish their own games) but devs get a fixed salary.
As for piracy raising the prices, well think on this. New Xbox360 games are £40, back when Playstation was out their games were £40 new. Same for SNES & Megadrive. So these 'big budget' latest generation games which cost so much to develop should cost more than the old ones did. But they don't and part of that reason (although no company will ever admit that fact) is due to piracy.

Cahos Rahne Veloza does have a good point too. Old games being milked again & again is just some pathetic attempt to make profit for companies who claim piracy was the reason their game didn't sell all those years ago. Wrong, its because it wasn't interesting/appealing enough to sell.
    If there is any spies from a company that fits any of the above statements then this one is for you;
    Stop flogging the dead horse!

Because I wanted PERFECT remake of the first-generation Pokemon games (RGBY).

However, my pirating Emerald in an attempt to make it Yellow 2 failed, cause the game wouldn't load. :(

Well being it Australia can be sometimes late arrivals in this instance very late, because there's only but one store I know that shelves vintage consoles and games.
