It generally seems that animals are good at communicating with people willing to listen

 

I guess.
But usually I make friends with every stranger dog or cat I meet. =P

 

Haha, that's nice, some cats won't like or will like some people as apparently they can sense what a person is feeling

 

That's the trick about communicating with animals. You have to show them, that you're not afraid of them and that you don't want to hurt them.
Best way with dogs is putting you hand in fist and offer it to the dog while watching over his/hers eyes.

 

Dogs are usually more friendly than cats unless they are of a violent history

 

Dunno about that. They're always friendly to me. XD
