i onced used zone alarm and it has combination of both anti-virus and anti-spyware. its good but i hate those pop-up if i will allow this program to be access, its quite annoying.

spybot doesnt automatically detect spywares and stuff right? what program does detect it automatically?

spybot detects nothing unless you run it regularly. its not designed to offer resident anti-spyware protection, only to detect and remove when it is run.

so, is there a resident anti-spyware program you can recommend? cause spybot is like 30-45 mins to finish searching...

I don't know of any good resident anti-spyware programs, but javacool spywareblaster changes computer settings to help prevent you getting spyware. (you have to manually update it every few weeks though, unless you pay for auto updates) What's the problem with running spybot once a month?

Just run it when you're at school or something.
Or when you're doing your homework.

Use teatimer, it comes with SpyBot 1.62 and all other versions.. And yes there is a Resident for Spybot....

    What is the Resident TeaTimer?

The Resident TeaTimer is a tool of Spybot-S&D which perpetually monitors the processes called/initiated. It immediately detects known malicious processes wanting to start and terminates them giving you some options, how to deal with this process in the future.

    You can set TeaTimer to:

be informed, when the process tries to start again

    automatically kill the process

or generally allow the process to run

There is also an option to delete the file associated with this process.

In addition, TeaTimer detects when something wants to change some critical registry keys.

TeaTimer can protect you against such changes again giving you an option: You can either Allow or Deny the change.

The TeaTimer is always running in the background.

I have been using Teatimer since conceptions. It works as intended.

How to get it working :

If you already installed spybot do this to have it working..

You start Resident TeaTimer by clicking on Tools → Resident on the left navigation bar (therefore Spybot-S&D has to run in Advanced Mode). There you can tick the checkboxes next to Resident "TeaTimer" (Protection of over-all system settings) active in order to activate TeaTimer.

    or

if you are installing spybot for the first time, be sure to check mark TeaTimer... it shows it at the very start of installation process of spybot install.

teatimer is annoying, if I wanted confirmation every time I tried to do something involving the registry I'd switch to vista.

Spybot S&D is resonable for detection but not so good at removal. Malwarebytes anti-malware is much better at removal of problems. http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam.php

Malwarebytes was able to fully remove virtumonde from my system in 2 passes.

your post on #21 states that Spybot does not have a resident, whether its annoying to you are not, is not the point and also FALSE for not having a resident software.

There is a feature called "remember this decision" this means if the sub scripts are similiar in nature that it will remember types of writing to the registry hives, meaning you won't see "Allow or Deny" pop up as much. So comparing it to Vista, is over hyped as the security feature in Vista doesnt remember, it simply justs asks for Deny or Allow on every single installation setup. It's also not designed to block malware/spyware/keyloggers/trojans/nested scripts/NTFS streams.

There is another older software works as far being a resident blocker on all types... and its older than Spybot has been in existance... it's called WinPatrol, and the software is tiny. The pay version is WinPatrolPlus and WinPatrol freeware with nag screen. This may be the next best alternative to SPYbot's Teatimer.
