xboxes are actually closer to PCs than PS3s are, in fact the xbox360 is just a modified PC with a special OS. In order for a system to get a virus, the system must be able to execute untrusted code and there must be virii designed for the system. There are no virii designed for PS3 and it cannot execute untrusted code. Given the complexity of the PS3 architecture it is very unlikely that anyone will invest the resources into making a virus for it. The xbox360, on the other hand, uses the x86 architecture and it would not be a huge job to modify a PC virus to trash an xbox360.

How ironic that it is closer to a PC when the damn thing can't even use standard laptop drives...or play any video format if you have stuff on an external HDD...

I like the PS3 because it uses ordinary PC stuff like a standard laptop drive, and miniUSB cords for controllers. That, and I don't have to do anything special to convert AVI files for it to read on the PS3.

You would think being big ole Microsoft, they'd take the lazy route and just use PC hardware, and design their OS to read AVI, x264, DivX, XviD and all that.

I find it ironic that Sony beat them at their own game when it comes to multimedia. That should have been Microsoft's strong point.

the xbox360 does use mostly PC hardware, the hard disk has an encryption device attached to my knowledge. The CPU certainly uses the PC compatible x86 architecture. As to the lack of codec support, Microsoft have always been very bad at supporting stuff that they don't own or didn't invent (or steal). The only reason windows supports those codecs is because third parties have made windows compatible releases of them, something microsoft can't prevent. H.264 is in fact owned by apple so no further explanation is needed on that point.

Sony have always been big players in the audio/video sectors, and have pioneered quite a lot of innovative technologies in the two fields so it's not really a surprise that they're still leading there.

I keep forgetting that I use CCCP for codec support. It's usually the first thing I install on a new PC so I forget it's even there...

I just find it funny that to upgrade a PS3, a simple HDD swap is all that is needed. And to upgrade a 360, you need a special "Micro$oft" HDD, and you need "Micro$oft" cords when I can just go out and buy miniUSB cords for my PS3 controllers.

A lot of people have to go out and buy a special 360 controller to be able to use it on their PC, when all you need for a working PS3 controller is a driver or two.

I'm in no way a Sony fanboy, I just haven't said any reasons yet to spell their name with a dollar sign...
When the PS3 first launched and had maybe 1 or 2 good games, I basically used it for two things: playing movies that I got off of the internet, and heat. It wasn't until recently that I acquired a bunch of games for it. Had that been an Xbox 360 with hardly any good games, it would have just sat there because no games meant no purpose to the console.

You don't need a special 360 controller, just a wired controller. With the wire attached, not a cord from a charge pack type thing.

That's nice, but if you don't have a wired one, you still gotta go out and get one. Who actually uses the wired ones?
In that sense, it is a special 360 controller.

Either way, Sony wins on that count. Standard PS3 controller is fully usable with just a driver installation. That, and if you're savvy enough, you can also do it through bluetooth and not use the cord at all.

For some, it may be cheaper to buy a wired controller if they don't want to buy batteries or a charge kit. So it's not unheard of.

i starting to hate this topic and other like it. there are some people who come here and they make good points. like the one above me. but then there are the die hard people who will make them self look like an ass just so they can fell better. (i know off topic)

i have to say ps3 dose have a lot of good things. but still the one thing that i do not like is that you must install the game on to the ps3. we all ways have t do that with new game and it get boring at times.

Forced updates/installs are the exception, not the rule. I for one have not installed Valkyria Chronicles or 3D Dot Game Heroes and I have not updated UFC Undisputed 2010. All that is optional.

In most cases the installation is optional. It's a good idea to do it though because it speeds up loading in future.

it also reduces usage of the disc drive which, for physical media lovers, is good.
that would be the only reason i install.

3D dot game heroes has very small load times, but i still installed it.
