Back when I was into RPG's (which would be the C64 days) I would use basically the same names in every RPG I played.

Fighters would be named stuff like "Basher", "Slasher" or "Lumpy".

I'd call mages stuff like "Wiz" or "Castor"

Clerics would simply be called "Healer" or "Priest"

Thieves I would call "Pilf" or "Pilfer"

But see, back in the C64 days, you kinda needed descriptive names for your characters or you'd get confused as to which character was what during a battle since color palettes were very small and sprites all looked about the same.

one of my mates loves coming up with ridiculous names. He always has a character named Nala, and aside from that anything goes. Barrett in FF7 was asshat, and in Dark Cloud he had balls, pole, nails (guy with a mallet) and boobies. You wouldn't believe he's 32.

I named a Metapod "Penis" (aww yeah. lol) but released it later because I was bored. I named my rival "ASSY", I named my character "Blargho". And then I named my starter "What".
