Maybe for you but for most people, private server is the closest thing they can get without paying to Blizzard.

They suck because they're full of bugs and they crash often, preventing you from enjoying the game as it's meant to be.
If you think you'll like the game, then I suggest to go straight to an official server. The game is not hard at all, and there are so many sites about it (wowwiki, wowhead etc.) that you'll learn to play in no time. Be careful though. If you start playing and liking it, you will have an hard time when you'll try to stop. That game is the most addicting thing I know.

Have you thought of problems like financial issues?

yea some of the quests are bugged but it hasnt crashed on me once [im lvl 38] and honestly i have more fun on the private server than i did on retail.the people are nicer, its not full of beggars, its not overcrowded, and less ninjas im glad i looked into free servers because i wouldnt be paying for the bullshit i went through with the retail

I've never had any of those issues with retail. I did have issues with private servers though.

Since nobody mentioned that before, no.
And I was just explaining why private servers suck, since I spent 2 years looking for a decent one before deciding to go official. If you play on a private server, you're not playing the real WoW for 2 main reasons:

    - Bugs: you'll always find some, even if the server's staff is awesome and the machine they use is super powerful, bugs are going to ruin the game experience. Quests, skills, spells, raids, NPCs... If you learn to play in a private server and then decide to move to an official one, get ready to learn almost everything from the beginning.

    - Community: as nu885 said, you'll find beggars, ninjas, noobs. MANY of them. But the massive number of players create situations that you'll never find in a private server, such as the economy of the server or the battlegrounds with players from all the servers of your continent.

Sure, a private server is good to start and learn the basics, but if you REALLY want to play the game, you'll have to play on an official server.

Since no one actually answered with a private server, I'll tell you the one I was on for years. It's called RTK Gaming. Google it. It should get you right where you need to be. It's x3 experience but the drop rates are x1, as well as everything else. It's the MOST STABLE server I've been on and has the fewest bugs compared to the hundreds of other private servers out there. I've tried them all, and this one is one of the best. It used to be where you could talk to the other faction, but they have removed that feature since last I played.

As far as the comment on Community goes, you'll have to step up and CREATE that community. If you want a hot Auctionhouse going, you'll have to create one. When I first started playing, the AH was DEAD. I made thousands of gold per week just posting on the AH. I sold everything from low level materials to high end stuff like Arcane Dust. I made deals with people on both sides to where I would buy all of their supplies at a discounted price, and then resell them on the AH. I profited, they profited, so everything worked out. It was easier to just sell everything through one person instead of having 5-10 people selling their own. I even made my own forum page displaying what stock I had, what general price range, and I'd have to update it just about every day.

However, when I played battlegrounds and arena, there was a great divide between people with the top end PvP gear, and people with absolutely nothing. There weren't many people with mid-grade stuff. The problem is that people make deals so they can obtain the best gear by essentially throwing the match so the other person can get the AP and the rating. Don't judge a person's skill by what gear they have, they probably cheated to get it.
