It was perfectly fine, it had been 2 days since your last post so it was no problem at all.

i've just had a nasty one and had to format my drive, it wouldn't even let me bring up task manager.

i hate having to start from scratch, but i now have a back up of my optimal setup and a boot disc to load it if all goes tits up

Had the same sort of virus, just did a scan and found the infected file, but the virus scanner couldn't delete it so I had to delete it manually, and it was gone...
That creator of the virus wasn't very smart... most virusses dissappear not that easy...

If you really want to get rid of them... Follow these steps:
    1. First DL AVG and some Anti-SpyWare programs.
    2. Run your computer in safe mode when you start up (Google it to check the F## number key.. I forgot! :( )
    3. Search with both anti spyware, and AVG and see if anything comes up.
    4. If nothing comes up, and you know they'res still a virus....

Eh? The computer been infected with viruses, trojans and adwares?? A mere anti-virus software or a virus cleaner wont help since the viruses have scripts to disable virus cleaner.Hmm this is how I solved my problem on my old win2000 laptop.

Step 1.Scan your CPU local disk and take note of suspicious file names.

    Step 2. Download ' hijackThis' from Cnet.com

Step 3. Plug out network cable and reboot/restart your CPU

Step 4. Execute HijackThis and higlight all the files to be deleted with force.(WARNING:Do NOT delete any win32 files or windows configuration files as this would affect your local disk)

If I were you,I'll start saving up and buy myself a personal laptop/notebook.

You cannot scan your CPU... the CPU is the Central Processing Unit, it's what does all the number calculations, you're most likely confusing it with "Computer".

    Just a question guys:

Back in the 90's some viruses can do really nasty things with your system, like fraguing your hardware or becoming imbedded in your hardware become what was called a ghost in your machine. An example of this is that damn CIH or chernobyl virus.

My question is, are there still nasty viruses like this nowadays, or are viruses nowadays just made to attack your system's network capabilities?

viruses cannot destroy hardware, it is a physical impossibility.

is it possible for a virus to make the fans stop working and make the processor fry?

I remember when CIH was rampant, it's attack was time based, if your system was infected by it. If you turn on & use your system at a specific date of the month (every 18th or 23rd I think?) it will do some serious damage to your system.

deleting the MBR would stop the OS booting.

Good thing there was a Wikipedia article on that blasted CIH virus:

And what!? It was primarily rampant only in Asia at the time? Aw :'(
