Why the hell not? Sure, Tactics wasn't numbered, but it was so goddamn ahead of it's time in terms of storyline that it should've. It *kicked* VII's (it was the latest numbered FF back in the day, it's not like I hate it or something) ass: from the battles (they quickly become boring in just about every other FF, whereas it's the meat and bones of Tactics) to the pacing (there's NEVER a dull moment in the storyline). To this day, it has the most original FF storyline, and what is cliched in it (like the heretic on the run thing) is presented in such a fantastic way that you simply forget it's a cliche (a la Chrono Trigger). No, it's not only my favorite Final Fantasy game, it's the only Final Fantasy game that I truly enjoyed, and one of the few games I've gone over the 100 hours mark. I remember buying it instead of VII back when it was released, and haven't looked back since.

Final fantasy 7. It has everything. The story, artwork, gameplay, cast of characters, and music are all exellent. it's a 10.

    Then final fantasy 10.
final fantasy 4 (not the wii-ware one. beat it in about 9 hours taking my time. its probably closer to 7 hours long. they didnt put any time into it.)
    final fantasy 9

Will do :) . I'd say Tactics is my favorite due to the aforementioned reasons, and at a close second I'd place XII, due to its fantastic presentation, sharp dialog (it has the best script of the entire series), fantastic voice acting and overall battle design (the story behind these was pretty damn dull tho). I haven't played enough of the others to have a solid opinion on them tho, I just finished them and threw 'em away.

About the gameplay it's full of random battles...and random battle is a bad design.

    1 - ff9
    2 - ff10
    3 - ff8
    4 - ff12
    5 - ff7
    6 - ff6
(i dont know enough of the others...)
FF9 ok, i think ff9 is the best because the storyline really put feelings through it that you can really feel, along with the atmosphere being magnified by the music. the cast was just about perfect (except for the evil queer)

FF10 ff10 almost beat ff 9. i was worried when i heard that 10 would have voice acting because that messed up a lot of games back then. but i was astounded! the voicing, characters, and story was amazing, and it never slowed down! the climax kept building up to the very end! it was a very amazing game and it still is.

FF8 is a great game as well, but not as good as the other 2. the romance only appeared at 3/4 of the game.
but it kept up a good and attracting storyline in the meanwhile. draw system sucked tho.

FF12 i almost wanted to put ff12 at 3rd place but i didn't because of one reason, lack of romance. the battle system is amazing, i really love it and i admit, i will miss the atb style battle, but i gotta say, the new battle sytem (name?) is really great. love it.

FF7 why did i put FF7 this far back??? i must be some kind of weird noob.... well, i will say that the storyline is great, romance and even a small piece of a love triangle scene going on, but i just couldnt place it above the other ff games. i dont really know why, maybe its because its been so long since i played it...

FF6 the only other ff game i played...dont remember too much about this one, though i do remember i had me hooked for some reason, but i just cant get myself to remember the story.

    hope that wasent too long guys 8) 8) 8) 8) 8)

It's alright if noone really remembers FF VI because it will be remade into 3D for the DS soon and then you all will know the excellence! I agree that the Wiiware FF IV title is too short, but it was made for mobile phones in episodic format. When they ported it to the US they just decided to put it on the Wii instead.

    1 - FF7
    2 - ff6
    3 - ff8
    4 - ff9
    5 - ff5
    6 - ff4
    7 - ff12
gets confusing from here because 3 is 6, 2 is 4 etc so just leaving top 7

FF7 is top because it is simply the best game ever made. best characters, best story - its believable and relevant ie eco terrorists saving the world, 2nd best villain(1st is kefka ff6), the materia system is easy to use but has everything you could need, great music.

    first of all
    ...
depends of what you mean with "best"
lot of time I discussed with someone about this
    because
    lot of people
    put in first place
FFX only because it has a good plot
but i did not put it on high position because
    the spherography
is an awful way to level up
    maybe the worst of all...

and I like the most the FFIX way of learning ability and skills...
    now I don't have time
but soon I'll let you know my personal standings
    :)

    WHAAAT~

Dear sir, you cannot say that Final Fantasy XI or Crystal Chronicles are NOT part of the main series. Each are unique in there own little way, they all have Final Fantasy inside of there title. By ruling one or two out you will have to rule ALL of them out, as they do not follow any in-game chronological order. Also, I will have you know that the first Final Fantasy to be released in the US and EU was Final Fantasy III, there was NO Final Fantasy II & I in our country, and I doubt there ever will be!

Although, I can understand you ruling out games such as Chocobo Dungeons, the crappy one that no-one remembers for SNES, and Crystal Chronicles as they do not involve any roman numerals to mark the release order, E.G I, II, III...

But I am quite dissapointed that you would disclude Final Fantasy XI, it is a game that follows on the title series and SHOULD BE INCLUDED! If it was named Final Fantasy, The MMO then I would have no problem with you discluding it, but, you sir are a fool to leave such a great game out. I can also grantee that you haven't played the game, because it's too expensive for you, which is also the reason why you download Roms from the internet. (Don't blame you though, £30 for super Mario brothers!? what a rip!)

    Yours, in very much anger,

    Azomatic

    EDIT:

Also, FFX is the best, the plot, the skill system, the characters, there voices!? I beleive that they all work together perfectly and this game was the pinnacle of the Final Fantasy era, and it went back down after 12 was released..

FF XI-an MMO-Well it's not because it is too expensive. It's not worth paying when i can pay for a way better MMO-a little game known as World of Warcraft.

    [my opinion]
    FF- VIII
thumbs up -> limit break XD, nice plot
neutral -> GF Good idea... and I love Shiva and the funny attack of Brothers, but later in the game you finish for use always them or don't use them at all...
thumbs down -> junction (I'll prefere this system over that one of FFX... but it force you to choose between using magic or not...)
so, in the second half of the game you may ended to use only attacks, limit breaks or sometimes GF and using only healing magic
    :)
    [/my opinion]

    Re: THE BEST FINAL FANTASY

I really hate people who think that you have to be a fanboy in order to like FF7, all you have to do is play it for yourself, not because everyone else said it was good...

    Anyway...
10 - FF 9 (I really hate this one, the characters are ugly with their big heads and hands, it's like Kingdom Hearts...)
9 - FF 2 (It makes me sad to see this one in 9th place, it was a good game, but I suppose the others were just better...)
8 - FF 3 (I played the DS remake of this one, it seemed like a dumbed down version of FF5's Job System, wasen't as much fun as most the others)
7 - FF 6 (I didn't really get into the story or anything, I was having too much fun playing the game!)
6 - FF 4 (It was hard, but it was pretty fun too, the story is one of the best ones for an FF)
5 - FF 1 (It was fun to play the original Final Fantasy, I beat this game with all of the secret bosses dead in the Dawn of Souls remake)
4 - FF 5 (The Job system was spectacular, shame I never finished it...)
3 - FF 8 (The juction system was fun, the Limit Breaks were pretty cool...can't say I like the lovey-dovey story, but the gameplay makes up for it)
2 - FF 7 (I really liked this game, the customization is great, and the story is great...once you know what's going on)
1 - FF 10 (The storyline is deep, and the voice acting is amazing, Seymour FTW! The ending boss is one of the best fights ever, second to FF: CC's ending fight)

FF 12 didn't make it in there because I'm not very far in it, maybe I'll have a new order once I play that one some more
