I think it's impossible to get game over in standard mode, and in netherworld finest you would have to suck too...

No. Netherworld Finest is where it get's mad harsh.

And the later stages of standard mode can cause you to die if you're not careful.

Beat the game, and tell me how many lives you have left. You're supposed to live with 1000 lives for the entire game. Including the extra stages and boss rush.
