Ah I see. That game IS a bit difficult, especially without the 30 lives code.

Also, let me give you a little test of sorts.

Download the NES Contra (the first Contra only) pack, extract it then get the US & Japanese versions. Now play 1 level of both & compare the difficulty. You'll see that even without the 30 lives code the Japanese version is a tad easier than the US one.

Back in the day my friends & I played with the Japanese version on our FamiCom consoles (the actual cartridge that is), then when I replayed it on an emulator using the US version I found that I died a lot more on the US version.
