Hell even RomUlation had this problem when we went from ID based links to fullname based links. But to us it was worth it so people who had posted link just had to post them again.

oh hey, sony is planning on making a cheaper ps3 by removing some content from the hardware
unfortunately, it means making the backward compatibility even worse-perhaps you can't even play ps2 games at all.
that just sucks but i think its for europe
maybe i'll buy one if the price drops down enough

im not really bothered if I can't play PS2 games on a PS3, I have 2 PS2s after all... (one shared with my sister)

    yeah but i never had a ps2.
in fact, the last console i had was the NES and then after a 13 year hiatus,
i decide to buy a console-the wii (because i was basically getting two consoles
for one) but i missed out on the ps2. *sigh*

You will still be able to play old PS2 games, some at least, think of it as a semi-decent emulator.

Intel also said they had made a new chip which would be cheaper to produce so we will have a price cut in Europe, otherwise they're screwing us over.

you euro's are screwed. intel are not the chip makers, ibm is. even if they did exclude all the ps2 parts that would make playing a ps2 game possible on a ps3, sony will still charge you the same asking price[500-600].

yeah sorry meant ibm, I just read it in passing, something about 95 nm chip being replaced by a 65 nm chip.

I think it's kinda sad that they have to downgrade the damn system just to get more sales, but whatever.

its not necessarily a downgrade, just using a cheaper manufacturing process

it must be a downgrade! I just got a ps3 last week, and when i tried to play "FFVIII" the game was not recognized!! very interesting I thought, because "FFIX" worked just fine....... oh, and on a side note, "Driver" and "Driver2" also did not want to load; whats up with that?!

Well the cheaper 65 nm chip isn't a down grade actually. The removal of the PS2 emulation chip is, however.

Personally I think it's pretty sad that they're removing stuff to make it cheaper, their initial attitude was that everyone else wasn't being nextgen and now they're the ones who's cutting back on the technology to make some sales.

in a way it kind of makes sense why they downgraded the system because you can now download ps1 games to play on the ps3. however, you have to spend money again on a title you physically already own. very niice! "borat".

Well, hopefully they find a way to work around this, as I am sure that I am not the only one who would like to flip Sony a bird!! I mean, if you spend over 500 ducats on a system that everyone believed was supposed to be backwards compatible(as was the ps2), only to find out that you can only play all those classics by paying for them a second time, well......tweet,tweet!!

Nintendo makes you pay too, you have to buy the classic titles to play them on your Wii; and they're not cheap. =/

The Virtual Console was apparently insanely easy to hack into so you could get the games for free

Here is one such example, although this is old and probably doesn't work anymore.

Well, I tried your hack Asmadi, and yes...It does work, although trying to find similar hacks is not so easy! But I'm sure some buding code monkey is out there hard at work trying to find a way around that too. I have already modded my ps1, and my ps2 with ease(you have no idea how many i turned into paper-weights trying to get it right!!). I am currently trying to figure out a way do the same with my new ps3.

Unfortunatley, 2 things severely hamper my progress:
    1: ps3 code IS NOT the same as ps2(contrary to public belief!), and cracking it for new emulation platforms is not so simple;
2: its very hard to justify doing it after I just coughed over 500 ducats on the little bugger!

But at any rate, will continue onwards and keep you posted(man, this thread is really chasing!! ;)!!)

I would have said that is obvious... different hardware requires different firmware.
