A friend of mine I onced turned to has the same issue...NO MORE He quit helping friends and family for stupid issues, unless they pay...and if he's in the mood.
That is...true. Mom tells me to fix the laptop when something's "abnormal" in their eyes. Once she had installed lots of junk on it (Google Chrome and stuff) along with a game, she told me it was MY fault.
As far as being the "IT guy" at home, I just installed CIS premium (which is free?) and set a password on the settings and suppress the firewall and defense+ notifications. And voila! They can't do jackshit without the password. They can still use firefox and skype and play any games I have installed, but nothing outside of that. I spent about a good half hour setting all of the necessary permissions, but hey, they can't go and install any random software, or uninstall something important and I have a peace of mind that the system is intact exactly the way I left it. Any program that is on there is allowed with my permission, but any NEW software they download won't be able to install unless I do it. Meaning no shady spyware, and viruses are automatically deleted and/or quarantined. To add to that, I got a keylogger that monitors what they're doing so if they DO do something stupid, I'll be able to see exactly what they did and undo it. My dumbass sister thought it would be a good idea to mess around with the wireless settings. Took me 4 minutes to fix it, and hid the icon that manages the wireless settings, although I told her I spent 2 hours fixing it...a little punishment since she can't live without that damn thing.
i know how you feel i was installing motioninjoy a driver which is safe a week later when his internets not working for some reason he blames me
i agree with that, though i could point to a few repair IT people that could jump off a cliff as far as i am concerned, they are trying to overcharge for stuff, no lie, true story my mom screws up a pc by wiping the os off of it and well i get called in last minute and i didnt have my recovery disc, so i was like crap >__> so i started calling repair places near where my mom lives and this is what i got from them to install JUST an OS to the PC and they said the initial charge was $75 then $65 per hour after the first hourand told me it would take them 6 hours to install it. i was like WTF are you smoking!!! so your charging me $400 just for an OS to be re-installed and i hung up on them, staples was just as bad, trying to charge $150 to install an OS.
point is, that the people that repair PCs in my area need to have their heads chopped off >__> cause if i paid them 400 to fix that PC i could have went and bought a brand new one for that price
apparently sylar, because they are staying in business, so people are more stupid to pay the prices for it >__<
Repair services people feed off customer stupidity. Like the time i had my old compaq presario 700 repaired, it cost me over hundred of dollars which here in my country cost an arm and leg. Since that event, I studied to repair laptops and computers, also thanks to some people here in RomU I learned a lot of things. Got my certification from a local training school operated under TESDA that certifies me as a Laptop/Desktop repairman. I also self studied on how to install CISS on printers, which if you sent them to a shop, they'll cost you 40-70 USD without a ink waste tank. And now, I'm self-studying on how to build a DIY LCD/LED projector. Already built a projector for myself, but experimenting with a over-head projector projector turned into a LCD projector which i saw in youtube. God, if people try and do repair themselves, or study to repair things for themselves, they would save tons of money.
You should check out the people who work at call centers. But what might seem as a simple thing to us who know about such things is different for other people who don't have any idea about how a computer or a laptop works. I have seen people scratch their heads in befuddlement when asked to print something.
