It is? How about a platformer?

2d platformers can be fairly simple.

RPG Maker is pretty easy to use, you might want to check it out if you want to try your hand at making an RPG. It's specifically for turn based but i think you can use it to make Action RPG's.

using a game creation program won't teach anything about making real games.

No it isn't. I don't have any idea how to make a FPS but I've made a simple RPG which could easily be expanded.

As for coding language, python is just weird. I generally use Visual Basic, which is a lot easier than most, and which is actually becoming equal with C slowly.

Actually, it is. FPS games are generally linear and a series of confined spaces with relatively little interaction with the environment and usually fairly basic AI. RPGs tend to be non-linear free roaming in open environments which are highly interactive and use quite complex AI

Unless of course that RPG is named FFXIII... then it's basically a one-way trek through some pretty scenery.

    Isn't VB super noob?

visual basic is a very easy language to learn, and while it has probably become a lot more powerful since I last used it, it will never be equal to C for the simple reason that it's not portable. The only OS it can run on is windows, whereas C and C++ can be compiled for different OSes, and even different processor architectures. VB is still a long way off the power and efficiency of C type languages as well. As a long term user of VB, I would say it is not suitable for writing games in.

I never said it would, but learning enough coding to make a viable game will take awhile, using something like rpg maker would most likely let them test the waters of their abilities for stories and graphics, instead of learning to code, then realizing they can't actually come up with anything.

Pretty much learning to code to make games is a huge endeavor, ab game creation program will make it easier.
