Servers are just powerful computers with a lot of ram (and disk capacity in our case) and a very fast internet connection. They never get switched off and have battery and generator backup in case of power failure.
Technically we had three last week because the contract on our old one hadn't run out. As to when we'd have to get a third operational one, it's difficult to predict, but it's not happening unless we see a substantial increase in our revenue. *Sublimal message that is not noticed by the concious mind* Hey, they have premium accounts. I think I'll get one. *End sublimal message, normal thought resumes here*
let me guess. paton's and yours computers are romulation's webservers. from what i've seen, they're the fastest around, along with seph's, but if seph's pc is not a webserver, then it must be yours.
no, they aren't. Although my computer has battery backup, and patton's has a generator backup, my machine is on a 1MBit broadband line (45KB/s uplink) and so is useless for serving webpages. It's also turned off whenever I'm not at home, and my parents turn the internet off when they aren't using it. Both our machines are used for gaming, thus are too heavily used to be servers.
Our servers are rented from a professional data center, they're both on incredibly fast connections (file server connection has pushed 241mbit/sec and site server has pushed about 100mbit/sec) and are quite high spec, the file server has 4 GB RAM to be able to serve all the downloads. This is also what is driving up costs, The connections themselves are pretty expensive and it's no secret that our expenses are upper $xxx range.
