Or a system restore up to the point just before the update.

Can you confirm the drive worked before the update.

If you uninstall the drive and Windows "cant" find or install drivers for it,then it wont work-but its not working anyway.

You could try cleaning it first, its up to you

Windows vista to Seven is a helluva upgrade, the imcompability issues with XP's programs that Vista has, there's no more that in Seven, besides, who told that need to buy a original one?
I payed R$10,00 (U$07,20) in my disc and then I stole some activation keys, I got DELL's key here, but it's OEM, so you can use a pirated one, when Microsoft send the black window with the pirate messege, you run RemoveWAT v2.2.5 and can update it as if were original.
I use it over than a year, my customers even more, they were never caught by MS.
Besides, Windows Update in 7 is more accurate, it can find the correct drivers without you bothering to find it.

ok um you should try to reinstall drivers like before. don't worry nothing is going to happen unless you're a complete idiot who just cancels the installation in-between. if that doesn't work then your DVD-drive is dead. you can buy a replacement DVD-reader that doesn't burn. those are pretty cheap.

no point, dvd burners are dirt cheap these days. Probably even less than read only drives.

I thought Duncan said the Laptop is a week old,so why would he start replacing hardware at his own cost.Isnt it still under warranty or something.

Chris, much as I think W7 is great,it hasnt found the wirleless drivers on 2 x Laptops Ive had.

because its part of the firmware of the burner, i installed it, then it went to the firmware part oh and i uninstalled it, guess what? the comp did recognize the hardware bu still refuses to run, next on my list is get a CD/DVD cleaner, even since i have already an external burner/reader i dont want to use it all too much, and it costed me over 500.000 bucks

Best thing to do to rule out OS issues is simply set the BIOS to boot from DVD/CD and use a bootable disc. If that doesn't work then the drive is definitely broken, if it works then it points to the OS install.
