Mobile phones have a huge aura around them which strikes most teenagers with "i can have something decent (I want something better than <name>)"

My phone is very old. It does memo's, texts people and calls people. It has no games.

My phone is convenient. It helps me with communication, so yes there is a point.

I do that as well to keep my standards high-trouble is my mates when they txt back...it's all short cut :(

I can't read it-a 2 txt reply becomes 9 because I'm asking "what the hell is hbd mean?"

...as for databank's claim, it's a belief that talk shows and cranky old people say-at times I agree with it but most times an odd "WTF" and "omg" shall be used...

...right now my phone is jsut a "ring brother and see what he wants" since I see no other reason to use it.

Lmfao Mds64. I'm also a grammar freak, After all...

"You type pls because it is shorter than Please, then I'll say no because it is shorter than yes."

Why would you waste all the lovely vocabulary at your disposable and resort to such simple lexical choices?

Surprised I haven't posted in this topic.

Living in a small town, I see no point. If someone needs something for me, they can either call the restaurant I own, the house phone or my husband's cell. As I'm always at either of these places.

Phones aren't necessary but they aren't pointless. The positives outweigh the negatives. I'm thinking of getting one only because I manage a restaurant and my employees need a number where I'm guaranteed to be there.

When my kids grow older, I will not give them a cell when they're in grade 4. Cell phones seem to give kids this sort of image in their mind that they're older and much more mature than they really are. Which isn't the case at all. Forcing kids to grow up or pretend to, I don't think it right so I won't give them a cell until they're atleast in high school. They'll hate me for it but they'll understand someday. That and there's no reason for a kid to have a cell.

I also don't like texting that much because I can understand english shorthand, I chose not to write it but I can understand it. But 90% of the people I know are french and there's french shorthand and I can't understand it.

    Qu'sque tu porai te faire?
    What could you have done?

Something like that, but much worse. Since I don't know it off the bat.

Also cell phone companies rip you off. BIG TIME.

    Convenience.

Yes I guess it is more convenient, but life isn't exactly short.

Hahaha! I'm not keen on those website even though I have an account on facebook. Just to see what a few select people have been doing lately without having to phone them up.

    mobil phones CAN be needed.
for example, i have been stranded at a train station many time with my moblie.
it is the difference between frantic parents calling the police about a missing child and getting on with their lives, picking me up from the station ten minutes later.
also a good prop if someone is stalking you

I don't think kids should be given cell phones because they don't really need them. I mean kids stay at school and it's a pretty secure environment and a lot of kids don't have to commute to and from school. But lending them mobile phones during field trips would be helpful.

For teenagers and adults, I think phones (while not "necessary") are very helpful. For my org, I have to contact a lot of people by SMS and it's easier to coordinate meetings with friends I don't see every day through SMS. And it's useful for emergencies, too. A few weeks ago, when the super typhoon Ondoy hit my country, I was stranded in school because the flood was neck-high on the roads. My mobile phone was my only link to people who could help me.

I think it is worth it. Most of the time my mum and dad call me to check that I'm ok. (sometimes)
