damn sensitive people, hehehe... so in australia, people get offended easily if you say goodbye? or later mate, or chow, ttyl? so the ending message is like, you hang up first, no, you hang up first, and another no! you hang up first! ?

well, i use mobile internet just for emergency situation like i need a game faq really bad and dont want to go and turn on the comp.

calls to family is like when i really miss them or its urgently important which is not a lot because we just live near to each other.

i dont download games thru mobile download, i upload them using the game i downloaded from the internet.

and its so dumb to subscribe to those daily horoscope, lucky quote for the day shit which, like you said cost so much. if i want my lucky message, i just go and talk to a cop/priest/teacher. they say all that i need.

i got a mobile phone so i can talk mobilely, so i think it is necessary for me. it depends on the person. it's a waste if people get it just cause it's cool. i use my mobile phone a lot whether texting or calling. mobile phones arn't pointless if you use them. i'm usually never near a phone when i'm out playing basketball or in school. and my parents get worried if i don't call home XD. so for me, it is definately a necissity

i've got one, but honestly i can't even REMEMBER the last time i used it, or to receive a call. including my parents and myself, a total of only 5 people know its number. it's "good to carry for emergencies" but in most cases you don't get the chance to use it for said emergencies. i go around school and honestly i'm about the only one who freely chooses not to carry a phone. i mean, seriously! if you want to talk to someone in the same building, call and FIND THEM! there's no point in sitting on the line for a good hour or two on the phone, wasting minutes, when they can easily meet up and talk all the same.

    mine is needed

i need to know where we are drinking, when, and what time

mine doesn't cost me anything and i get free minutes
went to cancel my contract and as i been with them so long they dropped the price and where i didn't want a new phone they put £180 in my account and i only have to pay £10 a month on an 18 month contract so i pay nothing at all :p

They can be as necessary as you want them to be. Mine, I just leave it in my pocket, and if I get a text, I reply about half an hour later :p

women are very, very social creatures in australia, and this friend of mine would talk to A LOT of them :)

men usually have shorter chats, but sometimes old mates tend to keep going regardless of remaining credit-when I first got mine another mate called me the next day and we talked for about 15 mins about random crap, i reminded him about his credit might ran out, he was likem "nah" and then a minute later it died XD

I wish I had your luck Equitypetey-that would be an awsome deal-customer loyalty-but of course they know they are still making cash from you in the long run standard buisness-even fast food places do discounts for regulars XD

That reminds me of myself. I barely use my cellphone, but I keep it in my pocket all the time. I can't find the real necessity of mobile phones. But during college my colleagues depended on it, because of the lack of good planning, and my parents found it very good to be able to reach me anywhere (I still wonder why). I have a refillable plans (not by bills) and when I top my credit I could stay for months. I can imagine myself living without it.

Here in south africa its the cheapest way to get internet and our mobile phone service is cheaper and better than our landline(its half governmet owned)Telkom.if we look at equivilentcy for my usage if on a landline would cost around $20 a month when i only spend 5 to 10 dollars a month for my cell(which untill recently it was also my only internet)

Yeah, bad cellphone reception in your parents basement.

Its necessary to own a phone, but for the original purpose of calling. Texting is another option to avoid disrupting others with the conversations.

Reception in your parents basement must be bad. Not much more I can go on about.

Prove this. Have a study to back this up?

Probably should've instead of just giving a vague statement hoping that people agreeing with you will just crowd it up in here. Instead, you've given us no reasons with no depth and a vague statement.

This isn't true. Texting in its beginnings did force people to cut down what they were saying, since it's limited to like 140-160 characters per message. But, that's not an issue anymore. Most of the carriers now allow messages longer than that as it will simply span the message across multiple to ensure it's sent. Combine that with keyboards on a lot of phones now, and people are typing better on the things. In fact, it's the computers in general that 'forced people to cut down letters from their words', since they didn't know the QWERTY layout. So, are you going to stop using computers? Anyone who still does that is just a slow typer in general, or some company that's trying to be 'hip', like those text messages you get when you sign up for something.

Please, continue. What you provided was very weak.

Good on you-I only got one because I would be isolated depsite living near a city with net access (don't ask-I hardly use it now)

Did your mommy and daddy get you the preety pink one--watch your "views" here mate-people don't always need phones.

And you got the money to use GPS in yours ???

Sounds like my mother and her dam iphone-which she can't put songs on-and won't give me 20 seconds to add some in!

Point is-my view is mobile's are not always needed, I salute those who don't need one-and txting, no matter the intended purpose-is killing our language (I h8 ppl ho tlk ik dis sound liek dumo)!!!

As for the mobiles been bad for you-it had been proven (but can't find the results-old article I read years ago) that mobile signals are bad for developing minds, aka kids and teens...

The radio waves jsut arn't good for you-like living under a electical tower, but in your freaking ear!

Also-we weren't born to have these EMR signals going about-if god was real, he wouldn't have intended that we have contact with soo much of that...

It's not necessary, nor is it pointless; it's just helpful, like a coffee machine or a Nintendo DS.

Hmm, I agree that we don't NEED mobile phones, but that doesn't stop us from WANTING one. I've had about four myself in my whole life. First phone, was a very cheap one therefore crap & was also locked so I upgraded, second phone was my mum's old one. Did everything I need/want it to do (make 2 minute calls and text), third phone, bought off of a mate after the previous one broke and my current phone I bought because my third one stopped working. I can live without a mobile but it is difficult at times, not all of my friends have MSN and I like to keep in contact with people wherever I am. I don't have a landline so having a mobile is the alternative. Besides, I prefer texting over calling people anyways. Also, I do use slang talk but not so that you can't read it ;) I only use so that I don't go over the word limit and use more credit.

Ahhh I'd be lost without my phone, all them prank phones calls and telesales calls... and them wity text messages 'Hey I heard this guy reading a text scroll all the way to the ottom then started cursing the sender' *scrolls down* '<insert curse word>

Yeah, you know what I mean.

    Bloody mobiles.

necessary or pointless it all depends on the user. Whether they just want to waste their money just to show it off or they'll use it everyday to contact their friends, family, etc.
