I got this message when I came to my PC this morning.
I looked around and it apparently is an important folder/file for windows.
Is there any way I could fix this without a total reinstall of windows?

Does it say that after logging on, or when booting Windows?

run chkdsk. It might require a reboot.

    I ran chkdsk

at first I did chkdsk /p, and it said it found an error
then I ran chkdsk /r, and it came up with nothing

my PC has been on for nearly 45 minutes now, and nothing has came up about the file

"MFT. Master File Table. A relational database that forms the heart of the NTFS volumestructure that contains data about the files and directories on a volume. On each NTFS are two MFT's." (Translated by me)

its not a huge issue if it only happens once.

ok well, it hasn't happened again in the last 2 hours, so it's safe to assume that it was a one time thing...

but if it happens again, would it be wise to backup and reformat?

if you see it more than ones in a period of time then yes I'd back up. run chkdsk to be sure, if it happens a lot then replace the disk.

It seems Windows writes this file when shutting down.

I unplugged my E drive and Windows gave errors like
    "\$MFT cannot be written."

MFT is the master file table, where it stores the locations for all the files and directories on the disk.
