Depending on how much of a tinkerer you are, there is a version of the Mac OS floating around the internet that can be installed on a PC. It's called the Kalyway install disc. Some very basic directions are at this site here.

I've never done it myself, but a friend of mine did with moderate success. :)

By the way, this is totally not legal, so I won't post a link to the software. But I'm sure you can find it if you look hard enough.

There are multiple instances of people who run Windows on their macs, but almost noone runs mac on their Windows. Why is it mac is supposed to be better?

more stable on the proper hardware, less prone to viruses, more idiot proof.

Lol, macs being secure isn't really true. It's more like nobody bothers making crap for viruses for these things. Hell, Leopard so far have had more security patches than Vista, and Vista is still more secure than that piece of crap from Jobs's team.

I am not sure, I haven't used a mac (neither do I plan on using one thanks to Apple's stupid enclosed ideals) or deassembled one, however they seem to be using the same CPUs and GPUs used by PCs. I have no idea about their motherboards, but I am sure that Macs don't use BIOS, they use Intel's EFI.

I don't understand how Macs are better in multimedia stuff, Apple uses the worst GPUs available in market just to maximize profits. There are a lot of video editing software for Windows, but I never used any.. so I don't know a lot about this. Photoshop and other better alternatives are available on Windows. (Why would any developer develop software for Mac only? they can only profit so much from a small userbase). Also to people who think Macs are superior in graphics because Pixar uses them, well guess what? who's Pixar's boss? (Iunno if it changed now, but it was screwed-bulb Steve jobless).

Seriously, macs are very terrible in my opinion. PC for the win.

It is only recently that macs started using intel CPUs, before that they used powerpc, which is what I meant when I said proper hardware.

Photoshop is also available on mac, as are all the proper graphics software, and as for only having a small userbase, the mac userbase is generally very skilled professionals with very large budgets. Macs are superior to PCs in certain fields, and always have been. One of said fields is graphics.

Im not sure about that... Mac's DO have better protection, for PC's you need auto-updates and your computer will get a virus if you don't have anti-virus

Not that I don't believe you, but I'd like to know why Macs are better in Graphics. Apple still uses 7800 in their Pros. Don't even get me started with their laptops.

IIRC, CS3 doesn't work in Leopard or it doesn't work well.. I am not sure my memory isn't serving me well right now.

Like I said, Leopard is still less safer than Vista even after a lot of safety patches and the fact nobody bothers making viruses for that thing. Then again, I have a problem with Apple, so I am not what you call unbiased.

A lot of designers and such use Macs with Photoshop. It's just faster and more stable I guess.

Games graphics or graphics for advertising or graphics for film? Because I'm pretty sure there are very few graphical game developers who use macs as there would be problems cropping up when they went to merge their work with the programmers.

    What gives you that impression?
Most of the advantages for graphic design in a Mac OS have to do with the actual OS, not necessarily the software.
As long as the designers use similar formats it won't matter.

Macs can use the web just like other OS's can right?
There are standards that must be followed in any industry.

Yeah I was meaning graphics designers. You can't really print off clothes on your computer.

You can sure design them on a computer though. And it's probably only a matter of time anyway ;)

Mac or PC what? Which is better? Neither really.

Which do I want more? A mac. An iMac to be specific.

PC's are just redundant and windows blows so much. Only bullshit you have to deal with on a mac is the price which is just stupid. $1500 for a Mac with specs I can get for like a grand less? Only good thing is the OS which is extremely sexy. Both in functionality and looks.

Only thing windows does better is gaming (which is of little interest to me as I use a pc for actual productivity) and most people are not aware that Mac can in fact play a lot of the newest games.

i say PC. i have heard lots about how macs are more simple for people with less tech knowledge to use but i was setting up my friends new mac laptop the other day and it was hard. i mean it was impossible to find stuff and i never knew if the program installed because it would zip pass lots of of stuff then it showed up in the dashboard but it would disappear and then i had no idea where to look for it again. i spent forever searching through folder after folder looking for stuff. it was very confusing. what didn't help was my friend, even though he's had another mac for the past 2 years had no idea how to use that thing.

and i'm also quite confuse about the hardware, why is it so expensive! i look up the specs and all the hardware it had you can find in a pc laptop for a quarter of the price, my friend got his for $2000, and the video card was intel gmx3100 or something like that, what its that. how can that be good for graphic designers, is that really better than pc graphics cards? i dunno but the hardware i can get exactly in $500 laptop i saw on sale down to the memory and intel graphics card. and i know a lot of graphics people that use PCs, they use custom built PCs but still PCs and there are great programs for it.

it was also pretty slow and unstable for a intel core2duo. the thing froze on me after 10 minutes one time. it was better after a reboot but i have to say my opinion of apple and macs is way down. only cause how can they charge $2000 for that i just cant respect a company that so openingly rips people off.

and also the mac fanboys make macs unappealing. if i hear another one say your just jealous cause you cant afford one when i'm trying to ask or debate a reasonable point i'll scream, no i actually can afford one but i personally dont want to get ripped off. and i never had a problem with macs in general cause in the first place my first computer was a mac but that was a long time ago but until working on my friends new mac i really had good memories about macs. what happen it was never that confusing on the older macs. i would be able to start working with it and have no problems with them now though jeez very confusing.

And you can't really custom build a Mac, which is depressing for a few people. I don't know why you would want to anyway, Macs are usually blazing fast.

That's the whole point. The whole basis of not having to build your own system with various parts lends for a more stable system, everything is guaranteed to work just as expected. No having to deal with bs incompatibilities or driver issues. Everything just works.

Sadly, same can't be said for PC's. I'm not bashing here either. I don't even own a mac myself but I use one regularly on campus, f'in sexy. Built plenty of PC's and used Windows for far too many years to know how it all works.

So what do you do when you want to upgrade your Mac?
