You really need to work on getting Internet first. If you absolutely can't, then get a laptop.

laptop! desktop are okay but they are dying. not being extinct per se, but they are becoming a thing of yesterday. a thing of yesterday are things you should move on. sure a desktop is powerful but what do you intend to run on a powerful machine?! games are slowed to a still on pc so gaming isn't so useful. additionally, most games are still in support of dx 9 or at least most are in dx 9.

lastly, you'll most likely use your computer for social networking and probably social gaming, and those things don't really require heavy uses of tech power.

netbooks are becoming the real laptops [very portable and limited] and laptops are becoming the new desktops [very adequate and capable].

    ultra talking bullshit again.

desktops are not becoming outmoded. A laptop will never replace a desktop.

    That's crap because
#1 Netbooks can't do anything because surfing the net, typing documents, basic stuff like that.
#2 Laptops have barely any upgradability at all compared to desktops.
#3 A laptop that has similar specs to a desktop will 99% cost tons more.
#4 Unlike what you said, many people need powerful hardware things they do on a regular basis.

    Argument destroyed.

Our old desktop died due to the motherboard kicking the bucket, but for the good many years it has served us, never did we upgraded it. Maybe because back then i dont know how to assemble a pc but it may also be a reason that pc is extremely cheap than a laptop and by buying a new desktop, you can build a new one instead of replacing parts by parts due to new technology every month or year.

But by getting a very expensive gaming laptop, you risk of losing everything and lot of money. cause once a part of it get overheated or died, like the power and motherboard, every piece of it is destroyed.

So, in getting a a computer, you should think of its long-time satisfaction, upgraded ability and cost. In our family's experience, no laptop outlives a pc. Laptops are a quick necessity but pc is long time need. Unless my little sister gets a hold of any of those 2 and expect it to last a few weeks or months. lol

Also to add: If you want to mooch on your neighbor's wifi signal, get this type of device on your pc:

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16833166020

    or

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16833166022

Note: I know these are cheap, but i'm just giving example so don't bash on me about the brand.

I would refer that to a car (PC) being PWNED by Public Transit (Laptop/NetBook) Just saw that on Top Gear, again.

I've been waiting for Internet since like 2 years ago and I still don't have it. I've used my mom's laptop to "borrow" other peoples "unencrypted" wi-fi. There is like wifi everywhere. But now, it is all locked and I can't use it...
    ...yet...

Anyways, I got a Wireless G adapter from a friend that was actually willing to give me one to help me with my Internet Problem. I started scanning for Wifi in the basement (that time, the PC was in the basement) all routers were locked (DAMN IT!) so I found the Adapter again and searched for wifi in my room, still all of them were locked (GOD DAMN IT!) so as of now, there is no "unencrypted" wifi that I can us e. (HURRAY, MORE WORK FOR ME TO DO) I don't think I am getting Internet any time soon. The router (for Internet in my house) is a 1-port router using Dial-Up PPoPPE or something like that...

There are routers (old ones but they still work) in the basement and I can set it up so I can get Internet but he bdoesn't want to set it up or get me Internet :(
And I cannot believe that we still don't have Wifi. I was hoping to get wifi in the house a year ago during summer but dad said, "No"
HOLY CRAP, I am getting pissed and OMG, I am going a bit off topic-ish.

Anyays, there are PCs that do have Internet Wifi Adapters that are built it using PCI or PCI-E. I have an adapter, the problem is, the wifi that I want to borrow are all locked which really sucks.

With a laptop, I can at least leave the house and go elsewhere to "borrow" Internet. There are several at my old school and even more at the high school I am going to.

lose data? wasn't the purpose of the included dvd-rw drive on the laptop was to be used as a backup device. Or the included media card readers as well as the many affordable and portable hard drives [2.5" external hard drives go for less than $100 at 500gb to 1tb] that one can purchase.

i often like the upgradable arguement for pc. it is a nice idea during the old days because of the single core processor and other stuff in a computer. but today, a dual core processor with 2gb of memory and 160gb of storage is more then adequate and will probably won't require an upgrade for sometime. and when i mean sometime, i mean longer than 5+ years. i'm running a dual core amd 4200+ with 2gb of memory on a desktop and this desktop won't be upgraded until something is dead and that probably won't happen. i've had this desktop for more then 3+ years. now you have the amd 3 processors and other memory features on the market. will i want to upgrade?! no. there are faster memory, will i want to upgrade the current ddr2 800 for a 1200? no because the current one installed are enough.

the only good upgrade part of a desktop is the graphic cards. but again, pc gaming has slowed down and is it important to buy a desktop for this purpose when the purpose has little reason?! that's upto you but you already know my stance and reason. you have alternative to pc gaming, the ps3, 360, and wii. your gaming problem solved.

the only part of a laptop that is very annoying is the touch pad. i'm not used to this thing but i do use an external mouse and that solves the problem. don't like the monitor? get a big screen tv with hdmi and plug the hdmi into your tv.

laptop overheating? then buy a cooler. problem solved.

the best thing about current laptops is that it is a portable desktop of yester-years.

btw, cars to public transit [bus, train, ect...]. i like cars myself because i like to pay for those insurance policies as well as the other included fees. definitely i like cars.

160GB fills up in weeks... Also, you're saying PC gaming has slowed down, and yet mere days ago you were mouthing off about how sc2 requires a top end PC to run maxed?

sc2 as in starcraft 2? why would i talk about starcraft for?? starcraft and warcraft are very interesting games but i have never nor had any interest in these games. some of the pictures that i stumble upon when i visit sites have very interestint character picture in the game and it looks like an awesome game if it was like an action adventure game or so. but at it's current state, there will be no reason for me to comment on it's affair. the only thing i know about starcraft is that it takes place in space, warcraft is fantasy and both are real time strategy games. so i do now know where you got this idea from.

btw, the most popular game that was recently released, starcraft 2, will be on dx9c. that's right, a new game on dx9c and not on dx 10, dx10.1 or dx11. check out the specs, http://us.blizzard.com/support/article.xml?locale=en_US&tag=SC2MINSPEC&rhtml=true. current laptops should be more then able to play this game. but again, pc gaming is not growing any more, so why have a bulk.

    Hahah! Much agreed!
I don't use my Netbook for anything. I use my desktop for EVERYTHING!
Torrenting, surfing, burning, ripping, storing, converting, etc., etc...
My friend uses his netbook for everything, but that's because he doesn't have a desktop of his own. :p

    @ultra.

How do you say they're dying?
I have used my desktop for years and it has yet to give out. :p
I actually want one that is more powerful to play games, but I can't afford it right now.

@Ultra High end games can't be played on laptops unless it's fucking expensive and then it will probably overheat. Desktops have more power for the price and more customizability/upgradeability. And yes, technology changed so fast I think your Dual core laptop will be outdated in 5 years. Desktops aren't dying and never will.

    Stop talking crap.

Ahaha, this statement was killed by my grandma's house. Her house has 4 laptops, 1 for the store, 1 for her living room, 1, in the bedroom and 1 in her son's room. When i visit, the house gets 1 extra netbook.

oosh! seriously. but a desktop is better its more powerful faster better the only disadvantage is that you can't take it anywhere

The statement isn't killed, didn't I say not everyone has a laptop? Your grandma only counts as one person ;D

Also, you have a media/card reader slots because oftenly it is for your camera and you ran out of space to take pics. Therefore, you copy all of that data onto your laptop's hard drive. And what is something you might bring to a vacation? YOUR LAPTOP! That amd you don't need to find the USB cable that is somewhere in your luggage... :p

Anyways, a dual core with 2GB of RAM would totally beat my SLOW-ASS, OUT-DATED AS F*** PC. And I think that it would be outdated in 3 years because WIndows 8, etc. will probably come out by then.
