Want to blame someone? Blame the kid's parents. They're the only ones to.
I mean, were does a kid get a katana from anyway? Are you going to tell me he stole it from a samurai who was casually passing by?
If I wanted a real sword, I know where I would get one, my gf has one, just laying around, allthough it's rather hidden. You would only pick it up, if you knew it was there(it's not sharp though). I already told her that one day an accident will happen, and that she's already warned.
I bet the kid was in the same situation. He was listening to music, and playing Red steel, and then he decided to go play Ninjas for real. Who's fault was it that the kid had a dangerous weapon handy? The parent's, that's who!

You can also blame Vista if you want. Blaming Vista is fun, even though it is behaving properly for quite a while now.

At least someone admits that games/TV aren't wholly innocent...

The clue that this was clearly influenced in some way by a game or a film,
lies in his choice of weapon...a ****ing samurai sword.
Listening to music sure as hell didn't convince him to use a samurai sword...
Think movies like Kill Bill, and games like Ninja Gaiden...

Why did the kid have a samurai sword in the first place?
The same reason many people here probably have them...
They are glorified and seen as cool in games/TV and we want to emulate our heroes

Of course we all have sense and wouldn't dream of actually hurting anyone...
And we laugh off suggestions of being adversely influenced by visual media ,
and call the perpetrator a psychopath..
But the mind is a fickle thing, and ones mental state can change quite easily...
Your mental state could change due to stress, bereavement, illness....anything...
You feel like the world is against you..

And then what do you become?
You become Ryu Hayabusa defending his village,
or The Bride vying to take revenge on her enemies...
And that samurai sword is no longer a toy which you play with, hacking at trees..
It's a deadly weapon that you plan to use...

    just as Loony says..
Proper parenting goes a long, long way to eliminating this kind of situation...
But even people with a happy upbringing can suffer psychosis or a mental breakdown

    I agree with you.

The phrase "TV and video games will melt your brains" does not mean you will do whatever is shown on the media.
The media is one the many ways a person's gullibility is tested.
If a comedy show were to say "All people who appear Asian are born in China," while ruling out the voice and accent factor, then chances are at least 10k of America's population consisting of complete idiots will believe so, thus bring in a new age of stupidity and humiliation to our already notorious country.

I totally agree with you on that point and agree it is the parents' fault for not taking care of their child and not considering the things he might be into, but just for arguments sake, I need to raise this point. Graphic violence on TV and games is becoming more and more common and more and more brutal. I mean if you look at movies in the past that were rated 16, there was barely any violence in them, but these days you can see limbs and blood flying everywhere even on 16 restricted movies and games. I remember watching the original Friday the 13th movie and it said it was rated 18. Yet there was a lot of violence and disturbing hacking and slashing, but limited blood. Then compare that to Saw or Hostel movies now. The violence is much much more brutal. That is something to consider I think.

I had a friend that slashed and stabbed a guy with a katana cos he owed him drug money.

That was in the 90's, the guy went to jail for a while, and the one that got stabbed recovered (pheeoow), I knew both involved but when I heard about it I didn't realy think that much of it, thinking back on it, it's horrific.

It just goes to show how de-sensitised we all are to violence.

Especially since people with violent tendencies are more likely to gravitate towards violent content in the first place. (I'm not saying everyone who likes those things is violent)

Every once in a while, something inside the fragile mind of a human being breaks down causing them to snap. Let's say, for arguments sake , a nice mild-mannered person one day, the next day that person turns into a
crazy son of a gun.Whether or not a stimuli was involved is usually a 50/50 chance.

Could you be any more racist? Any more offensive? Any more illogical and random? Really. I'll be blatant - your social disregard for anyone but white males is absolutely appalling. I'll set "CJdogger" to now wordfilter to "McCain" or "Grand Dragon" for me from now on. Take your pick.
