Is video gaming considered as luxury?

video games are somewhat a luxury, but also a hobby... it's great that we have videogames... period.

oh and what about flash games... they are accessible to nearly everyone... so that would place videogames as a non luxury item

You need a computer and internet.
There are still poor people that can't get both.

IMHO, just because a group of people can't afford something, that doesn't make this something a luxury. There are lots of people who can't even afford a slice of bread here where I live, but that doesn't make it a luxury by any means. It's a necessity. On this day and age, a computer and an internet connection ARE pretty much a necessity, it's something that just about everyone needs.

    As for the ongoing discussion...

This. It's kinda like the opposite of what I've said above: just because you can afford something, that doesn't make that thing not-luxury.

    Bread is food.
If you need it to live, that why its more then luxury, its a necessity.
You won't die without Internet or a Computer.

No, but I problably wouldn't have a job, either. And I think that a job is a necessity. It's with the money I get from it that I buy my food, after all. A load of jobs now-a-days require a computer with an internet connection not only at your workplace, but at home too.

the public library has computers, internet and games... so it's not a luxury

the highlight is the key point! ps3/360 has gone in the wrong direction in making games for the general public. when ps3 came out, many people said it was too expensive. so people looked else where for entertainment. when ps3 prices went down, people were still looking else where for entertainment because it didn't offer new experiences for the player.

video games is a luxury good, but the industry is pounding it in the ground. the release of the wii revitalized the video game market. all the purchases of the wii means people got interested in video games again.

people don't need video games but video games need people. if video games suddenly crashed and all the companies are closed, no one cares other then those who were into video games. but video gamers will find alternative entertainment eventually.

    it is a luxury.

No. Crimson pretty much got it right, but as usual Ultra, you are 100% wrong.

Let me present a realistic example: what about kids that have no gaming consoles on their own that go to their friend's house every weekend just to play on theirs?

Crimson is right that video gaming is a privilege. It is not a luxury as there are affordable ways people can be entertained by video games. Arcade machines are another example.

By the way, you are arguing that owning a video-game console is a luxury, which is different compared to just video-gaming itself.

Since I don't need it to live, then it's a luxury for me.
