Is the difference between the age of the character and the actor in today's movies too great?

I see your point... christian bale is awesome. but that is why we have "B" list actors too, they need some space to grow

Wat, Einstein sucked at math at one point?

Sure, it took him a while for him to reach his full potential in physics, it's something you learn over time that you do have this talent, but it's still born with you. Sure you can work your ass off and be good at something, but you won't be as good as the people with the natural born talent to do it.

Oh, Leslie Nielson already played a bad guy, have you seen Creepshow? He made a great villain.

I said that he wouldn't be able to play a 12 year old in a serious film (unless he's acting as Jack or Big), he can do it for comedic effect though.

I personally think Brad Pitt is a great actor, I'm sure the critics agree with me. It's not that he only plays one character particularly well, he plays a variety of characters well. Watch Fight Club, then watch Benjamin Button or Inglorious Basterds. Different characters, all acted good, if not, great. There's a couple of cases of him being in a somewhat average film, but what actor isn't prone to a bad movie? Edward Norton falls in the same boat, Suis is right, he is fucking awesome too, I loved him so much in American History X.

There's of course the name attached to the movie for more money, but that doesn't mean much if you're actually a good actor. Dane Cook is horrible and a tremendous asshole in every part he plays (even Employee of the Month, a movie where he's the good guy), sure he's a bad actor, but he's a one trick pony, he can't get the image of him being an asshole out of any film of his (or even his comedy routines).

David Shwimmer can play any other different part, but not particularly well, I know this. His voice, his look, his mannerisms everything points to someone either being shy/nervous/anxiety problems/whiny/troubled etc. He can play those parts well, anything else, no.

Seth Rogan is another case of a one trick pony, I can't watch any movie I watch with him in it anymore, he plays the same character in every single movie. Same with Adam Sandler (with the exception of Reign On Me).

I don't like Final Fantasy and I don't really care. Also Cloud and Seph will always be Cloud and Seph. No exception, of course people are going to get tired of it.

They do hire newer actors too you know, look at the Watchmen, it suffered and excelled in this. While it brought Jackie Earle Haley (Rorschach) to the public, it also showed how shitty Carla Gugino (Silk Specter) is as an actress. Also the rest of the cast was so-so, overall it made the movie worse because they brought in actors with little experience.

You forgot Hugh Grant. Seriously, having a relationship with a lot of chicks these days requires you to watch at least one Hugh Grant movie.

I wish this included the Dr Who parody.

On topic, you could argue that Edward needed an older actor to properly portray his maturity. However, I don't know why they don't use CGI to work actors ages to the proper point. This oversight would have made the latest Indiana Jones at least a little better.

? They explained why Harrison Ford looks so old in the latest Indiana Jones (it takes place after the other ones, when he's 60 or something). That and good CGI isn't cheap.

to be honest I haven't read the books yet as I never even knew they existed. I went to the film after being told it contained Greek mythology and thought it was pretty good.

It didn't bother me that he was 16. I think the problem will come if they want to make all the books into films, the sea of monsters is due for release 2012 so he will be 17/18. If that means by the 5th book the actor is 25 then yes I'd think that was silly. I also thought the girl passed as the same age as the actor

Maybe you should worry more that Percys uncle is Annabeths grandad. I wouldn't let my son go out with my cousin.

I think you have to remember it's based on a book not the exact copy.

I'd also comment on the post about Edward in twilight being played by a 23 year old, I guess it's a problem Robert ages as Edward is not supposed too. the fact is Edward is not your ordinary spotty 17 year old, he is almost god like, maybe they couldn't find someone who could play that aged 17. look at what almost happened with the guy who played Jacob, it's lucky he grew.
