5400 rpm drives aren't very expensive, plus that firmware thing is as of now, when ISO Loader gets done (if it gets done) that'll most probably be solved.
I was referring to the size but i just remembered that terabyte drives do cost around £100 which isn't too bad. Also, there's no guarantee the ISO Loader will get around that problem, look at the PSP's version. It needs to be downgraded first. If they get it working with a 100% guarantee then I would do it. My luck is quite bad so I wouldn't risk it even for a 90% guarantee.
Doesn't Sony require you to download the latest firmware whenever you try to get online? Kind of hinders custom firmware useless unless you can bypass that.
Why would you need it? The only reason I modded my PS2 originally was to play imports. My PSP was just curiousity, and I am probably going to go back to OFW real soon. My DS is basically a pirate base, but that's a totally different story. You can just install Linux and do all sorts of stuff. I guess the only reason would be to pirate games? I find that actually buying games equals more quality titles. Plus, I have the original 60. And I am not going to open up that thing until the day it dies, or the PS4 comes out ;D
Lol @ Yellow Dog. Installing Linux on a PS3 locks out the graphics card for everything except official games. It seems that Sony were actually thinking about the hardware/software weaknesses this time around.
Just because we think of ISOs when Pirated optical media based consoles are the focus of the discussion, it doesn't mean it excludes mass produced pirate printed/bootleg games, or are you guys un-aware of such things? That's what happened with the Dreamcast, 3DO, PSOne & PS2 here in Asia. You buy games, from recognized legit stores (back when media piracy was tolerated here) at a fraction of an original game's price, but because these files don't have that something un-modded consoles detect on original discs you still need a modchip to bypass whatever the console detects.
Scary moment an acquaintance told me once about that matter. It was when Shen Mue was first released, he bought a bootleg copy of the game then as he loaded the first disc smoke began to come out of the console's disc loading mechanism. He had to have the console junked as the local repair centre deemed it beyond repair or was it FUBAR'ed?
Just saying that there is a way to bypass Sony's updates and games that are "40GB" aren't really that big. Most of it is just language software that can be or usually is scrubbed from the ISO. But when the loader comes out do tell cause I really hate buying games for the PS3 because I love my xbox more. Its just i really wanna play with some friends that have the PS3 and who would buy the same game twice?
