i just only very few original games, because in indonesia there are serious piracy problem that even the government didn't take care of it,
here films, musics, cassetes,CDs,DVDs,Game is easier to find the pirated version than original

Here's my oppinion in all of this "are ROMs illegal" debate. Yes ROMs are illegal, but they SHOULD disregard & exclude from the list of "protected" material (in this case ROMs) games for defunct systems. Like the NES. Now you may say, "it's still illegal because the Wii has the virtual console", my rebutal would be, "Does the Wii's virtual console include Japan only ROMs that were fan translated, but are now actually given "official" english translations by the publishers?". If the answer is no, then I'll still continue using ROMs & appreciating the hard work of fan translators & ROM Modification hackers because these guys are doing the job that companies like Nintendo should have done in the past & in the present :p

wii VC does not count because they're forcing you to buy yet another 3-figure console.

    Well okay then :D

Plus I'm very skeptical it even has games from dead game developer/publisher companies anyway.

Can I ask if this is legal...

Say I have a dumping program, ds or psp...

I dump the game I won...

But what if I sell/trade it away...

Would that be illegal to keep the backup but sell the original-or am I meant to delete the backup?

Or as one idea that popped up in my head-because of eb's "7 day return" policy, to buy a game, dump, and return?

Just asking-this site is illegal as it is, so no harm done right ???

that would be illegal once you sell the original. So long as you own the original its legal, because you made the dump from it.

So if I sell the original, which I have had for a few months-years in some cases, that is very much illegal and should delete it?

(I knew the latter was bad-just thought I'd ask)

yes, because you no longer own the original.

Now i'm not saying it iiiis legal, but if it is so illegal, why haven't they shut it down yet? Or why have'nt the people who make the site been getting in deep shit?

I think the focus is more on busting people for downloading movies and music more than games.

I like Cahos's argument and I'd like to expand it to games that the original company no longer sells. For example, you can find FF7 for over $100 being sold by some ass on ebay or you can download the PC version or PSX version and play it that way. Square isn't getting any money from some idiot on ebay so why should they care? The only person you're screwing over is the idiot on ebay selling it for over $100.

Buying anything used doesn't benefit the original vendor, it only cuts out middlemen, like private sales, or "used" stores. I can buy a used car from a used car dealership, but GM or Ford or Chrysler isn't going to see any of that money.

Think it's been clarified - backing up games is fine, as is downloading the ROMs of games if you already own said game... Of course, nobody really cares about all that and many - including myself - either download ROMs before we've purchased the games, or when we have no intention to. :p

Pirating has been around for far too long for people to still get their panties in a bunch about it now.

    It's magic. ;)
