I'm getting a little sick of vista and it's "Security"

    If your laptop works with Vista, it should work with Windows 7

    Then you have to reformat your HDD before you can install XP on it. Windows 7 is great though, I'd definitely recommend the upgrade, especially if you want to play the newer games on it.

    You should reformat anyway, upgrades are asking for trouble.

    If the system came preinstalled with vista then you will likely need a modified xp disc.

    If you use third party software to format your drive, you should be able to install XP with a standard disk.

    nope, preinstalled vista computers generally have SATA hard disks, which windows XP doesnt have drivers for, so it wont see the hard disk.

    I've definitely installed XP on a SATA drive before, perhaps you mean a specific type of SATA drive?

    No, XP came out before SATA became widespread so very few controllers are supported. You either need a floppy disk with drivers on (a problem since most new computers dont have floppy drives) or a modified XP disc that has had SATA drivers added.

    In some cases you may be lucky and be using a SATA chipset that windows XP has support for, or the SATA controller may have an 'ATA emulation' or 'legacy' mode that causes it to appear as a PATA controller. The disadvantage of that is you lose the advanced features of SATA.

    Vista 'Would you like to copy this file to here?' Person 'Yes' Vista 'It may be dangerous copying it there so im updating vista so you can be more safe and i disabled your internet so you cant download any viruses and i disabled the mouse and keyboard so you dont fix it, thanks for using vista'.
