Yup, it is legal to do your own backup if you own the original game. I'm sure most companies wouldn't care too much if you downloaded off a site like this, as long as you do own the original game.

I think it's a tough situation when it comes to the legality of sites like these. Some people try games and then go buy them, while others pirate as much as they can. I personally wouldn't have found out how awesome Castlevania Symphony of the Night was (and went and bought it) if I didn't get to try it first.

I'm in no way advocating piracy, but I think most of the older games won't see profit anymore (unless they are released for download onto consoles, ie Virtual Console). So if you go out and buy a game after you try it (even a used copy, if it's an older game), or at the very least get rid of it after trying it for a few minutes, I don't think there will be any problems.

Morally there won't, legally there's no question that it's illegal. Which is also why we comply with requests from copyright holders to remove downloads. That ensures that we can stay online with the remaining files.

Yeah, but I suppose I don't have much problem because I buy numerous games per month, especially old ones. I calculated my video game purchases (just games, not consoles) in the last year or so... $469 lol. I think the industry won't persecute me for that :p. They probably love me by now, haha.

Its like in real life: i have got a copy of Maya 2007 that i Bought and my cd has been broken twice and Autodesk has let me download from a Torrent and they gave me a digital key file so.now if that happens with programs that are in demand then what are the morral qualms about keeping the oldies alive? the next best thing would to build a giant underground bomb bunker and put all of our "cyber" history in it(read with sarcasm)

A summary of everything discussed so far:
Romulation will not get busted because you donate
It is legal to make your own backups, as long as you own the original copy
The 24-hour law is actually a fake
Romulation complies with companies when asked to remove their game from the site to avoid closure
If you donate, your just getting faster downloads and more points, while helping to keep the site running
xNekox spent a lot of money on video games last year
And we should all build underground bunkers to protect our cyber histories

I remember when i used to see the 24 hour rule on old snes rom sites.

I thought the topic creator meant, he didn't want to pay for premium, then romu gets shut down, losing the money he payed

I haven't read the whole thread.. but the fake know-how about 24h legality and so on is pure shit and rumours. On a real bust only the sysop's are in troubles.. so don't worry. And do not correct me, i know what i'm talking about..k. /close

Correction: only the sysops are targeted. End users are in trouble too, they're just not worth the resources to punish.
