They arent. People might use bittorrent to download illegal stuff, but the protocol itself and related software are not illegal.

CNN do their daily news downloads via torrents, same for some Warner Bros. movies. They are available LEGALLY for download via bittorrent. It was in Wired magazine some time ago.

Lol monitored closely my ass. 3 years of bittorrent and haven't gotten one letter. Just DO NOT seed, and if you see a torrent with 40k seeds, find another, because usually it means its spoofed. If you use a site like btjunkie or thepiratebay, just read the comments and you'll know if its a virus or not. Also never one virus or any malware, though you will get false positives with any keygens.

if you read properly, I said limewire is monitored closely. Also not seeding is considered disrespectful.

I always seed, especially if it's something that was hard to get. Unfortunately I have to limit the upload speeds because my upload is awful.

Piratebay has some rediculous seeder/leecher ratios like 13-886 its rediculous

I live in the UK(sort of) and I am much less likely to have my torrent downloads noticed now that the digital bill has become an act of parliament as due to this shitty law (which has more to do with hampering free speech than copyright control) I have invested in a VPN.

You know my wife asked me why join a VPN when I really don't breach copyright all that often and I do not upload stuff that is not my own. My answer; "Mandelson's behind it", she instantly understood my argument and said, "feck that fecking fecker" (only she used stronger language).

So My chances of being shafted by David Geffen and Co. are the polar opposite of Lord "Vader" Mandelson's chances.

The chance I will have a problem with torrent downloads is nil.

Because some games/movies are nigh on unattainable and if they're old, won't be contributing to the makers anymore anyway as you'd have to buy second hand.

well if this law does come in, I have an offshore torrent server anyway (windows dedicated server running utorrent). Bananabit Technologies (www.bbtn.us) do good deals on dedicated servers.

how come they won't shut down the torrentz.com site mostly all it has on it is illegal anyway like films, series , games ,music etc

They're not actually doing anything illegal according to many country's laws. They aren't actually storing any illegal data on their servers.

And PirateBay. Only China and the UAE ban certain websites

I believe the US is the only country to make it illegal to link copyrighted stuff that you do not host (thats what the DMCA does) which is how they are able to shut down torrent trackers (except piratebay and others not hosted in the US) although theres clear double standards in play because the law also covers google and they haven't shown any intention of suing them.
