You can update your 2i to work with it, then you can update to 1.4. It'll be fine.

Yes it's safe. Keep a backup of your ROM just in case though. You can use that trimmer.

You can rename the NDS file anything you want.

But if a SAV file exists, you have to rename it as well. To the exact name you name the NDS file.
