brilliant one of my harddrives is squeaking now, but its a very old 40gig one that is only for my downloads so it doesn't matter but it is pissing me off as my torrent keep messing up.

oo 750 gb, nice... i have a 500 gb right now, but thing is i don't put a lot of stuff in my computer so most of it is just blank space, at least it doesn't seem to be messing up

The hard drive died. It cannot boot the OS anymore. I have a backup from October 9, so I will lose some of my files and a bookmark. I'm going to send it in for a replacement when I feel like it. In the meantime I'll just use my old laptop to go on the Internet.

Saw that coming, I'm afraid. Get a seagate as a replacement, they have 5 year warrenties. I've just got 4 replacements for 4 year old disks

Freeze the drive in a zip block bag, BANG the drive onto a hard surface once, and take the drive out.

    It will be perfectly new.

you've been luckier than most, generally the freezing trick works for one spin up only.

My hard drive is under warranty, so I won't get a Seagate for my current computer.

I got a refurbished HDD back. I couldn't figure out how to restore the hard drive from the image (Windows doesn't boot for some reason. It just stays at the POST screen with a flashing underscore). So I reinstalled Windows. Hooray. After installation, Windows BSoDs during the little green moving bar thing. I ran Memtest86+, and it turns out one of my RAM sticks is screwed. First my sound card, then my hard drive, then my mom's PSU, then my RAM! My house must be cursed or something. So, I'm running my computer with a fresh Vista install with only 2 gigs of RAM. I'm going to RMA the bad RAM. Limited lifetime warranty. :p

...Good thing I have all my pictures and music on my second hard drive. ;D
