I'd like to own a video game store, but I'd be happy working with electronics in general, Best Buy would be great!

I'm 24 and in my 2nd year of a Finnish BA in the UK. I have wasted 5 years studying crap at a uni in France, partly due to terrible Careers Advice, partly because I was sadly misinformed and because I let other people who I thought knew better than me tell me what to do. If I may offer any advice, *don't* follow blindly the advice given by Careers Advice people... I don't know how competent they are in the UK or the US (or anywhere else for that matter), but they're as lousy as they come in France, plus they can only offer you general advice, since they won't know you personally.

I'm studying to be either an interpreter or a translator, which is a career choice I'd recommend to people who like and are good at languages and who have quite some patience in stock, languages aren't something that you can learn quickly or by heart!

littlekiwibird:i hate to say it ,but you should have been more careful... you cant give your future and your live in the hands of a few counselors. I agree, they made a terrible blunder. But on the other hand, what stopped you from making sure if this is true or not... i do it all the time (thats why im such a pain in the ass telling you this...). I understand how you feel though ... or at least i immagine it.

i dont get it, you didnt know what to study and asked for an advice?

Well i learned foreign languages by heart and quickly (I speak 3 foreign languages fluently, plus im learning to talk/speak French at the moment... you know, withouth the bullshit in books with rules and what not)

if you dont make the grade for your first choice you cant go there (unless they make an exception), and likewise with second choice. At that point you have to go through clearing, which is basically ringing up all the universities that still have places open and asking if they will take you. I had to do that. (I didnt make the grade for my first choice, and my second choice changed their offer to a course I had no interest in doing). As it happened, the one that accepted me had been my third choice.

somehow i feel the same way... i wasted 4 years of studying but i don't feel any passion with what i'm doing. i want to take a different path, not a career but some kind of business. i can't work really well, i'm having problems with myself at daytime. anyone has a better idea for a business? i mean like a suggestion, it will really help a lot...

did anyone here ever ask why you want to go to school or why you want to go into a specific field? it's a hard question to ask personally because you're going to be highly pressured and demoralized by society. is it right, no, is it wrong, no. it's all about you making the choice you want and having to live with it.

to the person who is a game story developer. have you ever written a book for people to read? what is funny is that video games have a lot of story but they are very bad. you as a game story developer should try writing to the general public on a story. if you can find people who are willing to pay for that stuff or that they find it interesting to want more or to pay for it, then yes you are good. but don't assume immediately that you are better from personal experience because i can tell you right now, thinking like that is why you'll get screwed.
