For once, I agree with the Anti-video gaming crowd

Well thank you elk. Coming from you that means a lot. I just checked out your profile (the one linked to in your signature) and I must say that I am impressed. You do a damn good job of stating the facts, without muddling them up with too much information. It's refreshing to see someone who is able to use logic and reason to form opinions.

So what if Nintendo aren't required by law to make their products suitable for children? The point is Nintendo are constantly targeting children with their marketing, it is unethical for them to target children and then to make products which harm them psychologically or otherwise.

What game are you talking about? I can't think of a game that judges a player. Unless you think the game over screen is anything but some factual information.

Yeah, so I suppose because Nintendo generally targets children as their audience, they're never allowed to step outside that box. You're an idiot. Nintendo have released multiple mature titles (Touch the Dead, Dementium: The Ward, Theresia, etc.), and no one was trying to ban those. Why? Because, as I already mentioned earlier, Nintendo isn't legally (OR ETHICALLY) required to do anything. Furthermore, if this little girl has decided that whatever a video game says is true, her parents haven't done their job in raising her. And THAT certainly is not Nintendo's fault or problem.

Wii Fit has NOT been marketed as a little kid's game. I have seen multiple commercials that show families, and adults using the product. Therefore, you cannot simply assume that Nintendo was marketing this toward children just because most of their games are.

What this comes down to is censorchip. The article states that there are people who want to stop allowing children to play the game. That's ridiculous. If you feel this game is harmful for your child, then don't let YOUR child play it. But to try to stop the masses from playing/doing anything is restrictive and just another form of censorship.

    Wtf are games about?
    Winning?
    High Scores?
    Titles?

Games are always about doing your best and getting ranked because of it.
Even games without direct stats do this by having more difficult tasks for more experienced players.

Even though the Wii fit might not have been marketed as a children's game, it was still targeting children through the family. A family movie, game, car or anything else is something the whole family, children included can get some use out of.
Also, I never said the Wii fit should be banned or taken off the shelves, that's you sensationalising my opinions. I simply put forward the opinion that they should put some kind of age guideline on it like they do with most games. How can a parent know whether or not a game is suitable for their child without (a) buying/renting a game and playing through it or (b) relying on the age rating? It's all very well bashing the parents for not being responsible when buying games for their children, but the fact is, if they're mislead by the age rating, it's no longer their fault.

You're completely right. But that still isn't the game judging YOU. It's just judging your skill at worst. Imagine WoW turned round and gave a little pop-up saying "Dear Deathslayer1007, you are very unpopular as you have no WoW friends." somehow I don't think that'd go down well. It's too personal. I play games for the same reason I read books and watch movies, to escape and relax doing something I wouldn't be able to do in reality, or maybe wouldn't want to do in reality(which, admittedly sounds a little wierd). Being encouraged to do your best is different from being insulted.

    Why is there a disconnect?
You fail at a game and it tells you that you suck and it's fine.
But sucking at life is 'terrible'.

A game that tells people when they suck in actuality is far more productive than one that just judges you on gameplay.
We need MORE WiiFit type games.
We need a game that tells people when they are close minded, nonintellectual, douche bags.

I'm assuming this was a joke? If a program could only judge whether people are close-minded, nonintellectual douchebags we could quickly tattoo "IGNORE" on their foreheads! :D

Maybe it was the "way" Wii fit told the kid he was fat; I imagine it said," weight crushing balance board, cant breath, get off fatass!"

if the parents are too chicken to tell their kid is overweight than let the game do it, cause i'm pretty sure if the parents didn't feel their kid might maybe have a problem why buy them a game thats called "WII FIT". i mean if a man buys his wife or girlfriend an exercise machine whats he trying the say oh i jusst thought maybe to keep up that fabulous body of yours and stay healthy, yeah i think not its to say you need to lose a few hon.

i swear we might as well put these kids in nerf balls the way we baby them these days, this is an exercise game what are they suppose to do tell them to send in a pic and they'll get back to them on their weight no they use a medically approved way to judge your weight and then give you your fitness plan they setup for you, you know the POINT of the game. DUH. its not like they told the kid hey your a pig, and btw in school that kid will be much worst off cause i'm pretty sure other kids cant be ban and they will be calling that kid way worst names. kids are cruel and honest so let the kid use the game and get fit just like you intended when you bought the freakin game or shut up and let your kid fall into the category of obese like so many kids these days, its scary how many very obese kids there are nowadays with parents refusing the kid even has a problem. bad parents which is why a game like this is even necessary which is the really sad part of the story.

The point of the article is that the kid wasn't overweight.

The system is designed for adults, and therefore may give incorrect information to children.
It warns of this I'm sure, just like WiiSports does.

Overweight or not, it's a game. If she believes she's fat because a game told her so, then she shouldn't be laying any sort of video game as she might mistake it for reality.
