Worse. I don't know why androgynous girly-men are cool in Japan. And the stories are so played out and lame. Great storytelling? Yeah right;"What you mean to tell me FFX was all a dream? That guy must be stoned. And he dreams in turn based combat, stupid."
yea i completely agree on the way the story was written. it made no sense really on exactly what was going on.
Well not every Final Fantasy can have an amazing storyline. I mean they have already proven that they can come up with some pretty great story ideas, but its a little unrealistic to expect a creative story after so many final fantasies. In general and overall though, they do have great storytelling. I mean look at 7, 8, 9 and 12? The story in those games was truly genius, and lets not forget 4 and 6. But what people seem to forget is the actual world that these people are creating. Its incredible the imagination they have to craft such beautiful worlds and scenery in their games. The whole dark and depressing feel to Midgar in FF7, the futuristic and mecha like touches in FF8, the whole fantasy and middle ages look to FF9; that is just truly brilliant.
Heres my problem with all the FF games in general. The stories are really bland, the focus never is on the story. The focus is always on the characters and their "feelings". Also for the story in general the charachters seem out of place and badly written/designed.
A good story? Maybe I just outgrew all these anime-y stories/plots. Well then the characterization of each charachter is shallow. Like in anime their always stubborn and never learn anything, or never change. Now for deep/dynamic charachterization try GTA4s Niko. I know this story all too well. Question is why is Square still around after XI tanked? Maybe they could just rename all their RPGs instead. Anyways heres the square formula to making an FF: 1)Write a generic JRPG plot, along these lines bad guy who wants to take over/blow up the world, and then juvenile, unlikely hero who will stop him/her . 2)Figure out whats cool with those Shibuya hipsters. Also, put in what they frear most. Ooooh gothic lolita, victorian maids, anything German or French? Put that in. Let's also have them eat sushi in a pseudo-European setting. Gauranteed otaku bait! 3)Fit in our Sqare pattern characters ie., The she-man hi pithched whiny clueless main charachter, the mysterious badass, main characters girl, the outcast who needs to be loved, comedy relief, and the talking stuffed animal. 4)Lets make them super powerful, yet not so super powerful that they cant jump down/over a waist high ledge. 5)Chocobos and Moggs, kids can't get enough of "kupo". 6)MIDI era music. 7) Call it a Final Fantasy, sell to Otakus.
For someone that doesn't particularly like Final Fantasy, you sure seem to know a lot about it. Anyway, 95% of JRPG fans can't be wrong and Square is right up there as the best company in the market. You are complaining but I would like you to direct me to a JRPG series of games that has been more successful and "better" so to speak than the Final Fantasy games. Show me a series of games that has better storylines and characters than Final Fantasy. Show me a series of JRPG games that has survived so many releases and more than a decade of titles, that continue to be regarded as the best JRPG games in the genre. If you don't like it, don't complain and don't play the games. It's as simple as that.
Congratulations, you've just created the worst final fantasy ever.... How many hours did it take you to come up with that? : Because I know it was hours.....
the only thing i agree with is the mysterious badass part. that is true that every final fantasy game has one and some of them dont have much of a story or explanation at all on who they are. just tidbits of info.
yea i know all about sephiroth but in a couple of the games its been a playable character that u get in the game. and the game becomes drastically easier. sorta like auron or edwards brother from ff6. (it might be sibekin? cant remember his name.) all mysterious with no real back story and in some cases super powerful.
I haven't noticed crises core mentioned here in any detail. I liked it, it was different, a bit wierd but a lot of fun!
I really liked Crisis Core, it had a good storyline and I liked the battle system. Although the missions got repetitive at times. The only thing I didn't like was that it only took me two days to beat it. At least the ending was good.
I came up with it in minutes. better than squares track record of releasing games with the same content. If one just reads all the hype its not that hard to figure out what those people at square think. Like I said I outgrew the games. You'll figure it out someday. BTW notice how theyre all not interconnected? Every ff is a different game with the ff branding? they just can't think of new titles. Theyre just milking the ff brand name cow. I wonder how well the games will go for example ff7 was named "Cloud's story" or something. Those are ratings based on sales not if anybody liked the game. People seem to be easily wowed when a new trailer for an ff game comes out. Thats where those 95% of JRPG fans get hooked. I'm not complaining. Im just giving my opinion. I'm just encouraging, I hope, some people to be more critical. Hmm... Better JRPGs no, but better RPGs REAL RPGs those with roots from original pen and paper: The Fallout series, Baldurs gate, Elder scrolls series in these games you ARE the charachter instead of some kid with bad hair whom you tell what to do.
I don't think Square and/or Enix has any problems coming up with names... A look at their many non-Final Fantasy titles over the years should make that plainly obvious.. Sticking with the same titles is logical in any case since the games share many of the same concepts and mechanics... And of course there is the marketing factor... It's less of a risk to release a game under the umbrella of an existing franchise... And lets face it...first and foremost they are a business Western RPG's do come out on top when you're looking for a non-linear experience where you have some degree of control with regards to the games progression... They do not however, in my opinion, triumph when it comes to aestethics and story... You play a character with no character, interact with predictably boring NPC's, You complete repetitive quests and spend a great deal of time doing nothing... I have some degree of admiration for Western RPG's, and I do play them from time to time, but give me a JRPG any time...
That's why I like them. btw: It's the first time I see a poster being contradictory with himself in the same post. hahaha, funny times.
Contradicting myself? Maybe you didnt read it right, hahaha. Same content being Japanese pop culture. Not interconnected meaning stories, charachters locations. Its like Making the lion the witch and the wardrobe the sequel to fellowship of the ring. get it? On aesthetics, thats a matter of taste, I prefer things more realistic. Also I cant help but notice how japanese games (except from Capcom) seem dated in terms of graphics.
