    Oblivion FTW.

I just don't like turn based RPGs. But that's just me.

I have never played Oblivion but the ratings are good. FFXII i have played it and to me it wasn't one of the best final fantasies . The storyline wasn't as good as expected they focused way too much on the gameplay but the style of the gameplay is great. So if you really into gameplay and the Battle Systems than FFXII is a great choice.

FFXII isn't really a turn based RPG in the traditional sense of the FF series, it is far more free form than it's previous games. I have FFXII and Oblivion (360, with all related hardware and disk problems that for some reason you cant avoid with this console) and i have to say that there isn't much to compare about them, both far to different in gameplay, looks and what you can do in each game.
Oblivion lets you do pretty much whatever you want although there is, in my opinion, a very loose base storyline, XII, noobster, was not boring in the slightest. It did have a very basic final fantasy format where you get a party, customise them, fight monsters and opposing factions in this case mostly imperials, complete quest like levels with a boss at the end. FFXII lets you carry as many items as you want where as oblivion has an encumbrance that you cannot exceed based on the strength attribute, this gets annoying when you have the most expensive loot as some of the heaviest so you will be leaving things lying around the world. In oblivion you do have a whole lot of traveling around for hours on end to get through.
FFXII is a better game overall with a higher replay element along side it, this is just an opinion but both games are very good.

koal_ferrari: The simple answer to the oblivion encumbrance is to get a house. There is a house for sale in every town, with the cheapest, I believe, being the one in Anvil (the haunted mansion, buying it starts a quest chain and it becomes habitable on completion). Once you have a house you can store your items in the various chests, drawers and cupboards around the house and they will be safe.

Yes that is true but you do have to take into account that there is still a maximum weight that you can carry at any one time which would mean back tracking to any item which you couldn't pick up, FFXII however as many items as you like (or up to 99 items of one item)

I have played FFXII, but not Oblivion (didn't got the console for it).

Not one of the 'absolute' best Final Fantasy, but still interesting enough. Got your party of characters, familiar spells and skills, equipments and monsters, though the gameplay partly appeals to my inner tactician, but to each their own. But I do like the Hunts, a lot, which ended up with my characters getting good items.

But it's generally your call to which game you'll buy.

personally, i think oblivion is way better than final fantasy xii... the main reason why many people like oblivion is the durability of the game... 200 hours maybe won't be enough for you to finish it... :o

DragonQuest is awesome, and i would much rather play that than final fantasy i hate the battle system on the new one its wierd. dragonquest can get incredibly hard at times though.

So true. I like both FF and DQ, but DQ does get hard at times when its exciting, and you want to know what happens next. I always need a walkthrough, but most of the time, I work at it and find out what to do..

  14. I like Final Fantasy XII, it was a new battle system, and although it disappointed many old ff fans, it brought a new group to the game, which is good for sales, and hopefully they continue the high quality that they've delivered in the past, although, I have to say, XIII doesn't look very promising, but thats not what this topic is about >.>

I say go with FF XII, it'll keep you busy for a LONG time, some of the hunts are kinda stupid, what with the environment conditions required, but overall the game is pretty good, there is no love interest for the first time in the game (It looked like Vaan might go for lady ashe or the sister of that lord vain or whatever his name was, but oh well), the game is still solid and unless your going for a speed run, I'd say that the game will take at LEAST 125 hours (including hunts, clan primer toys, bestiary guide completion, etc) on the first run :D

I like FFXII also, but I wish you could of named your character like any other game. Vaan is the name you have to use. What do you think?

They have to keep with the set names, or else when scenes are played, they wouldn't say the players names. It would be cool if a game had voice engine built in like that..

    Thank you...
    I disagree....
Also....this thread is almost a year old..... ::)

  19. huh, for FF XIV (since I know its not coming out for XIII), they should voice a load of names, and this way in cut scenes, you can hear the name you chose!
They could either A. give a list of names to choose from, or B. just not say the name in cut scenes if its not programmed in
