Dutch speaking

  1. Yes but it's still just talking (not writing).
Later in the year we learn how to write English :).

Does make sense, it isn't actually stated on the forum rules that it's OK to speak in a foreign Language provided you give an adequate translation.

So I guess the best course of action for everybody is to "speak in English as much as we can" :)

That is to say, it doesn't matter if you can't speak (or in this case type/write) fluently in English, so long as you try.

So yeah, Grammar Nazi's like Moderasian might be pissed off if your English sounds mediocre, but as long as it's understandable then that's fine.

Also, by simple giving it a try & using the forums for practice, we can improve our mastery of English & in time we can sound as fluent as we can get :)

Seph wants to keep the site English only. It's just respectful to keep it that way. I can't make the decision for him, but if he decides to make it locked, I would assume "No Exceptions Will Be Made" will end up on the very first rule of the rules of engaging someone in a conversation.

  4. I'm just go talk english ;). I dont want to
    get this site locked :).

You're fine. Good luck on the studies for English.
By the way I, myself, am trying to learn Dutch now.
It's not a bad language at all.

Hey fellas I just realized something:

I know the "English Only" rule should be strictly enforced by now, but doing so will cause several problems of its own.

One in particular is when fluent English speakers bash non fluent English speakers & use this fact as an argument in a heated discussion. This thread is proof of this:

    http://forum.romulation.net/index.php?topic=47233.0

As you can see from trimbletown's post:

The topic starter was attacked for his poor sentence construction.

So, if we are to strictly enforce the use of English on the forums, we have to add another rule (especially on the Debates section), that no one should use another person's mastery of the English language as an argument to debate with (or in this case, attack) another forumer.

I do believe a grammar amendment should be made if Seph decides to enforce the English only rule.
Just telling people to not grammar bash anyone, as I believe Loony said, 60% of this sites users are form outside of the US.
As long as people are trying to learn the language there is no merit to try and discredit someone who misspells or uses incorrect grammar.

    Yes.

When I came here I had to use Google Translate. Now I can mostly read it, and mostly spell it correctly.

Though when I'm bored I reread posts alot of times and then correct the wrong grammar.

That said, most of the new people are mostly how I like to call them "chat speakers" and "n**bs".
    Both of them are worse.
Chat speakers: You can't read anything what they say.
Noobs: Always ask stupid questions which are already answered 100 times before, and mostly don't read.

Well the forum's search bar isn't entirely helping this one issue out.

Sometimes even if you put in a very good title for a search the result/s are not what you really needed.

The forums search feature is for single queries only. It doesn't cover string ones.
I'd like that to change one day if possible.

You can't really "speak" anything on the internet. You can type it though. :p

    yoshi2889 Well-Known Member

Yeah ok, but people just prefer typing (;)) "I said that" instead of "I typed that".

Fail, that is if you do not consider posting videos on sites like Youtube or using VOIP as a means to "talk" on the internet.

The real issue with non-English languages is how difficult it would be for the moderators to properly monitor the forums. By enforcing an English-only rule, it makes sure that the people in charge of keeping the forums clean can do their job. A non-English spam topic would be horrible :)

That being said, I have never had an issue with people offering a user help in their native tongue. I just ask that they make their topic in English originally. They can explain that they can't speak English, and users can then offer help in a language they can understand. Some technical stuff is hard enough for users to grasp, let alone it being in a foreign language.
