I don't really mind it unless they try to add it as a part of the plot, like a mute person becoming hero of the world.(Which I have seen before).
The one game I really liked is the Golden Sun GBA games.

I hate playling characters who are mute, because it feels like that they aren't there, like they aren't part of the game.

I prefer to play characters that have a soul.

Mute protagonist can be done and used well. IF the person who designs the plot knows how to use the mute. Otherwise the plot would not flow. That is by mute it means the hero doesn't have any lines in the plot.
It can certainly make RPG a bit different from the norm thus adding a different kind gaming experience.

Well if anyone played Fable, the main character is sorta mute..sorta. And I like it cause he looks retarded all the time during cutscenes he just stares when the badguy is talking.

I don't mind mute or silent protagonist, depending on their involvement in their respective game. I played couple of games with mute heroes and they managed to get to me...somehow, battlecries not counted.

Which is why, somehow, I like the Breath of Fire series' Ryus, Suikoden V's Prince and the Golden Sun's heroes. ~(-.-)~

Try Mario with sound off... then he's a muted hero too!

Muted is better because then they don't go saying cheesy lines that later become popular pop-cultural references.

Try Suikoden, the best non sqenix RPG out there..

i'd rather they speak a little bit, just to show they have a personality, but im not too bothered. im more bothered about the game itself. as long as the characters story still progresses (or exists for that matter) im happy :) some of the best games have mute characters, like chrono trigger
