Those posts sound "Matrix-ish" but yeah why not?

But as some of us pointed out, with us humans not fairly sharing resources & people, or kids living in less fortunate places, books will still remain their primary source of knowledge.

And like most relics of the past, books may lose their touch on the mainstream but they will still find welcoming hands in the form of antique collections. Who knows, in the future the internet may be available even for the mis-fortunate but then books might cost more than life & limb to collectors.

    Can you just imagine it:

Auctions being held for something as mundane as the "For Dummies" books or Antique collectors tracking down the last surviving copy of Harry Potter Book one or the entire Sweet Valley series inside an alarm tripped glass case in a museum?

research papers usually reference the library databases or scholarly journals, therefore, the idiots that post up incorrect information will not make its way there. never use wikipedia for a research paper.

Sounding a bit communist there Cahos...

I still value books and i'm 15 :-\ Movies are usually worse than the book, it spoils your own view of the character as well, I really hate it when important parts are missed out and crappy parts are added! :(
I still think books will always be valued, at times it seems like there are no gamers but nearly a third of the population play video games, as long as there are literate people there will be people reading books :)
    Edit- missed two words out...

I have some pretty valuable books, and loads of others. Most notable are my first edition copy of Shadowmancer (Worth around £5,000) and my 1966 first edition of Virginia McKenna's 'On playing with Lions'

Cool, some good books you have there if you are a collector, I have a book that's worth a lot somewhere in my house...
My favourite books are Stephen King's The Stand and Fire Starter, Marley and Me (Can't remember author) and the Keys to The Kingdom stories by Garth Nix ;D

Dan Brown took drugs while writing that... That's why it's dissappointing...

books will never get replaced because it's a great source of document. it will however get expensive.

there are instances where tv is outdone by the internet. live coverage.

books to movie will never be 1:1 because there are things you can't do in the movie that you can do in the book.

there are instances where a movie is better then a book. sometimes there are times where the explanation is hard to conceive so a visual is helpful. science fiction for instance maybe hard at times to grasp.

one day the world will be wifi'ed. or better yet, satellite access.

i know but over time technology will improve and we will be able to get world wide access of the net anywhere. cell phones for instance has gone a long way.

satellite is already global coverage, the main issue is the latency incurred by the signal having to travel 150,000 miles each way.

I remember this documentary in National Geographic about the history of the development of human technology. In one segment that dealt with communications the documentary showed the first attempt at telecommunications via satellite. In it, there were these guys who talked via satellite link up, it was an epic fail as the conversation was affected by lag time. It took several seconds before what person A said to Person B arrived & there was some reverb happening, just like when you call someone via internet phone when both parties aren't in sync with one another.

its the same problem with VoIP, the latency is too high. Anything over ~300ms end-to-end starts causing noticeable problems, while satellite is ~500ms just for the satellite part. Satellite phones use different birds in a much lower orbit in order to reduce the latency, however the footprints of these birds are much smaller, meaning a lot more of them are needed to provide the same area of coverage.

It doesn't matter, in 100 years of humans being gone all the equipment on Earth will be unusable and the satellites will end up crashing as well... :( 1,000,000 years and it will be un-recognisable that we lived here, the books will definately be gone.

If so cj, what about the legacy of the Egyptians & other lost ancient Civilizations. Sure their ways & traditions are lost in time, but because they left their legacy in writing & the efforts of Scholars, we are beginning to shed light into the past.

And speaking of which, it was also the fault of Christians why these ancient grand Civilizations' cultures were lost in the first place, defacing ancient glyphs & temples because they were "Peganistic" & therefore vile. :p

Humans were still around preventing nature from taking over, no humans at it will happen fast, old Christians were a big mess if you're talking about medevil times or "The Dark Ages" as many of the technology and findings were lost although they did keep Galen's ideas as it fitted in but some of his books were burnt by the monks and their monasteries...

Yeah & there are even some Scholars who think that, if the Dark Ages didn't occur that we could have sent a man into outerspace earlier. As proof, the power of steam was discovered at around the time of Plato (or was it Aristotle ?), but not enough research or inquery was done & the principle was just used as a form of amusement.
