if you bought a dell or whatever pc company or build your own and you encountered some sort of problem with the os, who do you call or where do you go to fix the problem?

what most people would typically do is call the pc customer service hotline [so that would be dells, hp, etc... customer service hotline] and what these companies would likely do is refer you to the microsoft customer service hotline to solve the problem. those who build their own pc would also refer to the microsoft os hotline.

if you're a linux user, who exactly do you call or go to have a problem fixed? there probaby is someone to call but i for one don't know who or what to do if something goes wrong. is linux even sold in retailers?

the point is, with mac it is expensive because you pay for these services along with other features and reasons. you don't get these type of services if you bought a pc and installed a windows os. this is why i said expensive is debatable.

some Linux distributions are sold in retailers, and some distributions have support packages you can pay for, otherwise you are dependent on the volunteer community, which is exceptionally good and helpful.

computer manufacturer hotlines are generally premium rate, The apple support helpline is fixed rate. Microsoft charge £200 per call. So you aren't paying for the support, because you get billed separately for it when you use it. You are paying for the apple name, nothing else.

now you know why linux is where it it at and why you can get linux for free.

yet because its open source its a much more secure and reliable OS than mac and windows put together. the volunteer community is so large that its not an issue.

Question: How I came here? I clicked on ''Press CTRL+V :D'', anyway: MAC has a taskbar ABOVE and XP you can MOVE the taskbar.

it is an issue because there is no one to contact to if you ever had a problem. if you had a problem with linux, then you go to a community forum where they help you. well suppose you couldn't get to the forum. how would you get help? suppose you didn't understand or don't care about command prompts and other technical lingo, where do you go for help in solving the problem?

you need to think outside the box, that is think outside of your own way of thinking [kill your biases].

theres email mailing lists, the community will help anyone, even people with no technical knowledge.

Dell and HP have Ubuntu Netbook Remix for their netbooks, and so do a whole buncha other companies have the original Ubuntu like gateway. And the community is cool, I get my help from there. It was very difficult though, my second non-windows computer that I actually use regularly, instead of the computer lab in elementary school writing presentations... My first switch from Windows in three years.

    200 Euro! That's like, 350+USD!!!
Or just get a mac theme, derr.
Or get a Linux, it looks like a mac a little...

if linux looks like a mac, then i won't use it......i just don't like macs! it's their false advertisements like on tv and that they are way overpriced.....and they aren't as good as they say.....

mac themes would make me not want to use windows.....i don't like the look of them.......just not what i like.

Ubuntu is the best Linux ever, almost as good as TinyXP.
It has a taskbar on the top, like a mac.
You can install it without having to make another partition, unlike a mac.
The taskbar on top is much easier, and it has faster shortcuts to any program than windows and macs.
WINE integrates non-linux programs inside Ubuntu, such as NDSTokyoTrim, unlike a mac.
It has only less than 100 viruses being able to hack into it, unless you dual boot with windows, unlike a mac.
If you need help, the community helps, and I have never found an unsolved problem, unlike a mac.
And all you need to do to fix your computer is to be able to type, copy, and paste text into terminal or gedit which is like command prompt and notepad, but 2x easier, unlike a mac.

Mac can also easily dual boot windows, and you can remove mac afterward, leaving the awesome hardware of a mac to run a PC.

I agree Loony, I recently put xubuntu onto an old laptop and had a few teething problems with it, the community support I received was fantastic, within 2 hours of asking, my problems were solved, and all for free :) http://www.xubuntu.org/

i tried xubuntu, but i really didn't like it too much. Though i've never really liked any version or distro of Ubuntu....don't know why though.

actually its about the worst ever. It has no features that other distros don't have and everything outside the GUI is completely buggered.

    Well, the GUI is cool.'

Everything else, could be a bit better, at least it isn't as shitty as Vista.

All say Ubuntu is good. For me, the worst ever is some crap that messed up my netbook, don't remember what its called.

Just wanted to be a sort of balance.

I was an XP user that got turned off with Vista. Moved to Mac and completely happy with my decision. It's simply not true that there's "very few" software for Mac. Of course, Windows has way more but just because OSX has less doesn't mean it's few.

Also, Windows games and software works on Macs. You can either dualboot Windows (awful, clunky option but there are times that there's no other way like when you want to play MMOs), running virtual machines, or using Crossover to run them on OSX. There's also an enterprise solution called Cider which games like Heroes V use to run OSX. There also lots of unofficial Cider ports for games like Half-life 2 and The Orange Box.

About the price, ultra is correct. You don't just pay for the machine but for the stellar customer service. Personally, I've already had somewhere around $300-400 worth of repairs and replaced parts for my under warranty Macbook free and with no hassle. Just bring it in, walk around the mall for an hour or so, and have it back. Broken, repaired, and returned all on the same day!

Anyway, the Mac vs PC debate will never really get resolved. Mac people will urge you to go Macs and PC people will tell you to go PC. I guess from a happy PC user's perspective, the Mac devotion Mac people have would appear cult-like. It's just a manifestation of how satisfied we are of our machine. It's not like we're all lying about what we're saying is good about Macs. In the end, the only real way to know if Macs would be good for you is to go and get one. A seemingly expensive decision in the short-term, yes, but one I personally, on my own experience, find completely worth it and more.
