reduced compatibility of drivers and software (although from windows 2003 that was mostly fixed).

Is it better then to stick with a 32-bit installed in a 64-bit motherboard?

unless you have a need for 64 bit (i.e more than 4GB ram), then stick with 32 bit.

The speaker is BIOS controlled. The pattern of the beeping also matters. It contains the error code or error message.

Your motherboard does not have a 32/64-bit designation. Your CPU supports 64-bit instructions, and your graphics card supports different 32-bit instructions. They are not related. Communications between them happens through a bus (PCI-E or AGP).

If your system boots (passed bios), then it's not serious. A PC won't boot if it sees conflicts.

The biggest downside of a 64-bit system is the support. Everything must support longer words and different instructions. 32-bit has integers of 4 byte, 64-bit has integers of 8 byte. Many developers are not used to this change (especially because C defines 'int' without its length, it could be 4, it could be 8).

Have you checked the BIOS battery?

Heat is a problem with many systems. Clean the dust out. Be careful if you are using a vacuum cleaner. You could suck up a jumper. Did it once myself.

Check the manual and the various jumpers. One that is loose or knocked out could cause weird boot issues.

Also check the supply voltages to the HDD. If it is low, then it could prevent the drive from spinning up in time for the scan.

Also, if the drive is 3 years old or older, it could be failing.

As for 64bit. I have been running it on Linux for over a year and won't go back to 32 bit. Of course Linux can run 32 bit and 64 bit software at the same time.

As for 64bit Windows. Forget it. No software really out there for most people. The 32 bit stuff runs like crap in the 64 bit version.

I have no problems running 32bit software on my 64bit windows OS. Sure 32bit software doesn't really see the advantages of the 64bit OS, but it doesn't run noticeably worse than it would on 32bit windows

Assuming the computer has not previously been opened or interfered with, I'd assume the disk is going and start backing up now.

its probably temperature controlled, meaning it spins up when the processor is producing more heat.

I was playing Unreal Tournament the other day, and it would beep every few minutes... But I couldn't hear my fan running or anything... In fact, I don't think I have ever heard my fan run
