Ooo. Those are great choices. Covers some diff tastes as well.
I can't back up the musical tastes of the OP, but my retro suggestions would be:
Master of Magic can kill several hundred hours of your life.
Quake 2/3/4 are always fun. Esp. if you have some friends to frag online.
Warlords Battlecry III as quoted above is spectacular if you like RTS style games.

On a note before i post my fave PC games list, there are a few on the list that are not mainstream and therefore hardly seen in public.

No. 1: Rise of Nations (undoubtedly the most realistic RTS PC game ever made)
No. 2: Battleships Forever (replayabitlity is six stars, you can craft your own ships)
No. 3: Heroes of the Pacific (Its an old WWII aerial combat shooter. Very realistic)
No. 4: Counter-Strike Source (An old but never loses its fun)
No. 5: Halo (of course, no list would be complete without this one)
No. 6: Carpe Universum (a fast paced scifi shooter, absolute mayhem)
No. 7: Age of Empires 2/3 (never gets old, doesn't it?)
No. 8: Starcraft (I know its the most balanced RTS around, but it has crap graphics)
No. 9: NavyField Online (MMOTSG, lets you get a ship and sink everyone else)
No. 10: Maplestory (Good game, but is weak in many parts.)

I am shocked that no one has included Planescape: Torment. It is literally the best RPG created, of all time. Followed closely by Icewind dale and BG. D1 & D2 (Inc. E.Packs) were equally amazing. HoMAM 3 was pretty beast.

Still, Planescape is the single greatest game to be made on PC. The story was, and still is, the best I have ever come across, and the way you continue the story, allows you to feel what you say actually matters. Classic game.

 

The first Fallout game. God, that game has so much going for it I never know where to begin with. Problably the only RPG that took the "role-playing" part of RPG seriously IMO. All-around fantastic.

Well most of the games on this list will be like 6 years old since I don't have a good computer.

Rome:total war is amazing and medieval total war 1 is also quite good, shogun is a bit boring and the gameplay of medieval is the same as shogun but better.

age of empires 2 is good same with civilization 3 but I prefer the total war series over them.

call of duty 1 is a lot of fun and compared to the few fps on the Playstation and X-box that I have played doesn't feel out-dated.

As people have said free space is great.

as for sim games I have tried all the different rollercoster tycoon games and zoo tycoon games and my favorite is rollercoaster tycoon 1.

A game you should try out is world of goo try the demo.

Here's my list, no particular order

Oni - F&%^%&^ classic! Only game that succesfully merges hand to hand combat, with guns

Crysis/Warhead - Both good games and the graphics are out of this world. BTW the destruction/physics are incredible

Borderlands - One of the most addictive games i've ever played. Trust me get it!

DiRT 2 + Race Driver GRID: IMHO, best racing games ever, and the graphics are nuts

DMC3/4: I think DMC3 is the best game i've every played, DMC4 wasn't as good but a decent sequel none the less.

 

actually IGN had ranked The all time Pc games...and the winner is X-Com:Ufo Defense...i didn't believe it in the first place but after downloading it and played it for tens of hours...i must say this game is the greatest of all time,not only pc but overall as well.
It's an old game and the graphics are what you would expect from a mid-90s game.
What really matters is the gameplay.Man,just man.
