Eternal Tears of Sorrow are a fantastic melodic metal band. Has some symphonic elements too.

As has already been mentioned - Rage Against the Machine & Rammstein. These are two of my favourite bands, one I recommend you check out (I have to admit to being biased here) - Blaze Bayley. Check out some of the videos on you tube. The newish line up is the best ever & the album 'The Man Who Would Not Die' is VERY heavy and VERY good - told you I'm biased!!

As for nu-metal & ANY modern 'punk' bands ::) Anyone remember the Dead Kennedys, Exploited, GBH....

.... alright let me mention the band named Blind Guardian.

They are not really for everyone.. but quite interesting. They are a rather old German band.

    snore!!

sounds exactly like the rest of the bands of that genre, just another iron maiden rip off (who although i know even inspired lots of modern day metal bands i like, suck comparatively to modern day techniques of playing)

    Natewlie A bag of tricks

I haven't been listening to Metal but lately I've been re-listening to All That Remains and their new(er) album is up to snuff.

Anyone know the more commonly tuning for metal guitar? I've been bored and I've been writing songs on guitar and I wanted to do a metal song and I don't know the tuning and too lazy to look it up.

The berzerkers first album was played in about as low a tuning as you can go and still make a coherent note.

Until they sold out and all their music started to sound like shit. IMO ...and Justice for All was their last great album. The Black Album was good, but it lacked the deep anti-establishment tone, and the heavy brooding melodic riffs that their previous albums had.

And yes, I'm a Metallica fan. I'm also an honest one.

Honestly who gives a crap if they sold out! I'm sick of people bagging metallica because of it. I say good on em for the right amount of money I would too. It doesn't change that they are a very talented band. I don't know about you but I listen to music for the music itself, not what the band members do with their lives.

Honestly, I don't give a damn what they do with their lives. All I was saying is that the quality of their music went down hill after they sold out. I like Metallica for their music, not what they do. I don't like their newer stuff because it all sounds too commercial. It's like......pop metal. I understand that it is very important that a band reinvent themselves from time to time, but sounding like what the recording industry wants you to sound like instead of remaining true to yourself, I think that's ridiculous. Remember "Load"? It sounded like punk grunge. I was completely surprised that they weren't wearing flannel in the video for "Until It Sleeps".

But all of the above is just my opinion. I'm sorry if you don't like it.

I do agree with you about one thing though. They are a very talented band. I just wish they would use that talent. I've been listening to Metallica since they released Kill 'Em All. I witnessed their transformation into metal-god status. I cringed in horror when went commercial, (btw, that's something they said they would never do.) And yes, I do listen to the music for the music itself, but when you no longer like that music, for whatever reason, why continue to listen? Loyalty? Respect? I don't think so. I respect their accomplishments, but I don't like their music anymore. And that's okay. The world will not end just because someone has something "negative" to say about Metallica.

To thine ownself be true. It's sad to think that you believe that money is more important than that. So that's what integrity dying looks like.......hmmmm. Sad.

Apophos, agreed 100%. You know, it's actually sad that Metallica are considered so great because as you said, since the self-titled album they have released nothing noteworthy. They created a type of metal that would appeal to non-metal fans. They changed their image from "jeans wearing, beer drinkin" thrash metalheads to something ridiculous (I mean they got earrings and cut their hair for God's sake). And now they are inducted in the Hall of Fame and win awards for what? Because they gave in to record label demands? Why doesn't the world recognize a band that actually deserves it a lot more and has contributed a lot more to the genre, such as Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Black Sabbath, Slayer etc and not some washed up wannabe's.
