i know i went through a very small death metal stage but got bored of it very quickly, and it the reason i left my band years ago because they wanted to play death metal and it was even more boring to write and play then it was to listen to it.

That band is sweet equitypetey. The new Becoming the Archetype album is really good too. It's progressive metalcore. Interesting.

They are deffinately progressive man. I mean the new album is. It's not full on progressive but it does have progressive elements. Reminds a little of Between the Buried and Me. Most the music I listen to is screaming or growling so I am not sure if you will enjoy anything I can suggest. Before the Dawn, Symphony X, Therion are some bands you might enjoy...

having progressive elements does not make them a progressive band...

If they incorporate a progressive sound to their music it makes them progressive. And I originally said their new album is progressive.

the music may change throughout the track and progress to something different but that's not how i view progressive, from a progressive metal band i expect something very different most of the time including complex beat changes i know i'm starting to describe mathcore but then again all "progressive" bands i like come under the mathcore or tech metal categories so thats what i see to be true.
i had a look at those bands and they could be good if they were not a epic pile of cheese :D i'm not in to the whole cheesy metal thing any more.

Just a little evidence of an official description of the band Becoming the Archetype to show that I was right in saying they are progressive:

"Becoming The Archetype is a Christian metalcore/progressive death metal band on Solid State Records that formed in 1999 out of Atlanta, Georgia. Their name refers to the Bible verse Genesis 1:26 which says, "God said, 'Let us make man in our image'" which coincides with the concept that Jesus Christ was the only person to ever be sinless, he was the ultimate archetype of humanity."

They may be a Christian band but they are really good.

Dr en Grey sucks dude. I'm sorry. I have the Withering to Death album and it's shocking. Has anyone ever heard Caliban? They are pretty cool. Some killer riffs. German metalcore but I like it nonetheless.

yeah haven't listened to them for a while now.

what about fellsilent an awesome british band and the riffs are extreme 7 string goodness, they sound slow and moody yet at the same time being fast progressive and awesome.

I have to revive this because I discovered two amazing bands from Taiwan.
First is Chthonic, a Symphonic Black Metal band. They are really amazing, blew my mind. They combine this brutal black metal style of vocals with classic chinese instruments and operatic female vocals. It's so dark and mysterious and "ghostly". It's amazing. If anyone want's to check them out, I really recommend the album Seediq Bale. Worth every penny, and with a new album coming out this year, this band is really gonna be huge.

Secondly, Anthelion. Another Taiwanese symphonic black metal band. They are just as awesome and have some amazing melodic heavy riffs. Check em out.

Generally speaking Disturbed is an awesome Metal/Hard Rock band, and one of the most epic sounding Sympho/Melodic Metal Bands out there has to be Shade Empire. Dominia Is an awesome Sympho/Gothic-Metal band, too! Metal in general is awesome!! ;D
