fair 'nuff. By the way, how in gods name is Disturbed nu-metal? What alternate universe do you live in where Disturbed fit the definition of nu-metal? Korn is nu-metal (meh) and so is Slipknot (technically speaking). Disturbed has no features of nu-metal. Although I tend to agree that I am rather underwhelmed by Disturbed. These days, in Australia at least, the popular (pussy-whipped) stuff is emo. All the radio plays is R&B, Techno, House etc. and Emo. Not even punk. JUST EMO. Kids who think their hardcore in Aus wear black, spike bracelets, piercings tattoos and WAY too much makeup.

You obviously have no grip on music, or genres beyond "metal", "rock", and "rap". Disturbed is as nu-metal as nu-metal gets, and I just reaffirmed my position by confirming their genre on last.fm and wikipedia, which are both crappy sources, but just convenient enough. The leading influences of nu-metal are bands such as Korn, SoD, Limp Bizkut (sp), etc. Ugh, I can't continue listing these bands, each that I type burns me internally. However, Disturbed is clearly classified as having heavy (aka muddy) pseudo-melodic riffs that are consistent with the roots of nu-metal.

Edit: And Slayer is thrash metal (and, unfortunately, one of the puke-worthy in the already degraded genre, but I regress...). Where can I get your drugs?

All arguments aside, what's the difference between Metal and metalcore?
I'm curious to know because it sounds like metal. An example of this
metalcore would be one of the earlier works from the band Atreyu, say
    Lip gloss and black. ???

Void, tell me, what metal do you like? By the by, I do have a wider grip on genres; "pop" is in there as well ;)

@ClydeOne: Ask Void. CBF looking it up.

IMO, most metalcore is just people who thrash away on their drums and guitars, and the vocalists just scream out the lyrics in their highest possible tone.
Metal can be much more melodic and have riffs and drum fills that actually have rhythm. Not just really try-hard blast beats throughout their short songs.

Heaps of people who love metalcore all think that death metal is just metalcore with deeper vocals, but it is completely different. The guitars in death metal songs, which at first may seem completely random and too thrashy. But when you actually use your ears and listen properly, you find that they use various complex riffs, and throughout the songs you will hear similar riffs that have been slightly altered to a different section.
And the drums in death metal have much more rhythm, even though it just sounds like lots of blasting. It really involves lots of complex fills. Listen to Inferno, from Behemoth, or George Kollias from Nile, and then you will learn.

tl;dr: Metalcore is crap and not real metal.

If you mainly like bands like disturbed, then you obviously aren't a true metal fan.

All my opinion by the way ;)

Metalcore is a subgenre of metal. If you want to get right down to it, you have: metal / hardcore (punk subgenre). To put it simply, metalcore is heavy and riff-oriented, typically with screamy vocals. Metalcore even has subgenres of it's own, including mathcore (Protest the Hero and such). If you want to know more about genres you'd be surprised how much google knows. I can't help but feel like a pretentious nitwit with all of this.

Vinse: I don't listen to much metal anymore, but I like melodeath, progressive metal, sludge metal, doom metal, atmospheric metal, stuff like that. Mercenary, Sleep, Darkest Hour, Isis, Boris, Electric Wizard, Mouth of the Architect, specifically. I've been more obsessed with IDM and other experimental electronic stuff recently, as well as some particularly amazing post-rock bands/artists.

I personally don't find it to be so. (In reference to previous post)
Though I prefer Deathcore, such as Heaven Shall Burn, Born Of Osiris, Bring Me The Horizon(Early works latest albums lean more towards Metalcore), and I Killed The Prom Queen among many others.

For any that may be curious, here are the characteristics of Deathcore as stated by Wikipedia

"Though a sub-genre of metalcore, deathcore is heavily influenced by modern death metal in its speed, heaviness, and approach to chromatic, heavily palm muted riffing and dissonance. Lyrics may not always be in the death metal vein, but traditional growls, and screaming are prevalent, often combined with metalcore vocals. Much of deathcore features breakdowns and melodic riffs,a trait which is attributed to the hardcore aspect of its metalcore influence."

I don't really care about all the little subgenres of metal alike, as long as it sounds good.

    Talking about yourself mate? :p

They're essentially just labels of definition, which can help to make choices regarding music. For example, if you don't like drone metal bands, you're less likely to check out a band with that label. Thank God, it can save you from SUNN O))).

Pffft, I may be an angsty preteen, but I'd never let myself fall to listening to Disturbed. ;)

Maybe so, but i remain a death metal fan. But deathcore still lacks the intense drumming of true death metal.

If you compare the drum tracks of I Killed the Prom Queen, to Nile, or something like that, the drums in the Nile songs will tend to be much more technically advanced and complex, while retaining the intensity and speed.
Unlike metalcore/deathcore, which focuses on only using lots of blast beats, which when you pay attention, are not all that fast.

But that is not all i like. I am a fan of Death, Black, Power, Viking, Progressive, and so on

If people are going to keep posting nu-metal bands in here, maybe somebody should start a nu-metal band thread so we don't have to keep reading about them.

    Natewlie A bag of tricks

Nu-metal = sub genre of metal.

Of course it belongs in this topic. Genres of music are subjective, for example, SoaD can be considered Hard Rock OR Nu-Metal, of course there are the few that don't care which category they fall under and just listen to the music they enjoy.

The metal band that I listen to most recently is Protest The Hero, technically considered to be Mathcore but whatever. Their newer album Fortress is one of the most deep albums I've listened to in a while, everything about it is good, the technical aspect, listening to it is good, vocalist goes from pitch to pitch. Just whoa. The whole song is basically a melodic solo with guitars/bass/drums and vocals meshed into one, it's really something to hear. I can't wait to see what they make next because their first album was way different.

Otherwise I don't listen to a lot of metal, I used to listen to SoaD, Disturbed, Metallica (and soon started to hate them, just because they got really annoying), Dethklok (inb4 cartoon band), Megadeth, Pantera, Avenged Sevenfold, Maximum The Hormone, Something Idol (they had insane double bass OMG).

Now I listen to more Rock, brit rock to be more specific.

all metal is sub genre because the base of metal is lost to all it sub genres, traditional ideas of metal is things like maiden but time has moved on and so has metal. do we really know what metal is? no we don't! metal is everything it is, it is its sub genres!
no matter what are proffered genre is when we speak of it to other who don't like metal it is described to them as metal but when speaking to other metal fans we then use sub genres as a describing method.

@Natewlie if you like protest the hero try Sikth, periphery and the arusha accord

Why are you all arguing about "Nu-metal" look at the genre you just mentioned... "Nu-Metal"... It's a metal topic hehe.

I wish PtH had a different singer, I've gotta say. His range is great, but his voice and screaming overall just murders most of it, in my opinion. And if you're into mathcore and rock in general, no harm checking out some math rock bands. Check out "Piglet" and "Giraffes? Giraffes!" ;)

the creaming is fine its the low growl that sounds shit (i think growls are shit)

and again i say sikth as it has been dubbed the best mathcore band there is or was (they broke up :'()

the reason people are arguing about it is because it sucks more balls then a porn star that specializes in ball sucking movies
and that you only think nu-metal is metal if you like it other wise its a travesty

Well if you don't like low growls, then stay away from death metal. ;)

    +1 :D
