if you think dragonforce are long you should try dream theater. A couple of their songs exceed 40 minutes, and 20 minutes isnt uncommon for them.

If you're going to listen to Dream Theater, you might as well listen to Tool instead. There's less complex guitars because Petrucci isn't showing off his shit, but it only means that the riffs are more melodic, albeit dark. Also, Danny Carey > Mike Portnoyfuckerhead.

Also, any fans of Converge? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gIB9Cai5kZ4&fmt=18 . Discuss.

complex riffs are good, dream theater where a stepping stone for me and now their riffs are tame in comparison to what i like now

    and they suck now anyway

metal sucks realy that is not music that is screaming

Try listening to a genre of metal that isn't screaming then before you instantly assume it all sucks then. There's so many different subgenres that there's usually something for everyone mixed in.

Didn't know about the new Ensiferum album, thanks for the heads-up grimsim.

There really isn't a so called "straight up metal" genre. In over a decade of listening to metal I can't really say there is a "Metal" band per se. Everything can be subdivided into a specific category of the huge sphere that is Metal. Perhaps the closest thing to plain metal is the Heavy Metal suubgenre (Dio, heaven and Hell, Black Sabbath). I personally hate genre's of metal because I don't see why everything has to be divided up. It's all metal and it doesn't matter what type it is. It all kicks some serious ass. That's all there is to it. Annoys me when someone starts saying that a certain band is a "progressive grindcore death metal band with black and folk metal influences". Seriously....

Yeah Reider. New album is pretty wicked. Go give it a listen. It's sad that Petri left Norther permanently to write with Ensiferum though. Norther are one of my favourite bands!!

Dude, what would you call music then? A rap or hip hop artist "talking" about how he will shoot up his ho's and sniff some cocaine? A pop singer that releases an album with ten songs about how much in love she is? Trance music that all sounds exactly the same for like an hour? Metal is so complex. It's not just about the screaming. There is tons of bands that sing clean vocals, have female vocals etc! It's all about capturing the feel and themes of the album. It is so difficult to compose a good song with instruments, unlike rappers/popstars that just need a beat and someone to write their songs for them. Metal ftw!! \m/
